Really first-rate IDOMENEO at Symphony Hall conducted by Mirga Whatsername-Tyla, who must be the finest female conductor ever in the history of music. She really is that good!
I was worried seeing the comparatively large size of the CBSO and the enormous choir that both the excellent soloists (Rachel Kelly as Idamante and Sophie Bevan as Ilia the standouts) and the music itself might be overwhelmed, but Mirga balanced it all superbly - and with such dynamism.
IDOMENEO is by now my favourite Mozart opera. Dramatic and filled with his best music. How could it have been sidelined for so long? First professional outing in Britain was at Glyndebourne in 1951!
