    Shostakovich The Nose ROH

We booked early for the upcoming staging of The Nose at ROH. I was especially interested having recently read Elizabeth Wilson's book (as recommended elsewhere on this forum). We went to an entertaining and informative Insights presentation last night. It went out live and is on YouTube. It is an extraordinary work for a twenty-year-old (albeit a musical genius) to have conceived. The director, Barrie Kosky, chose it as his ROH début and claims it as an undisputed masterpiece. The production promises to be quite something. They've had 6-7 weeks of rehearsal with all performers present and it seems that much ingenious design has gone into the set, décor and costumes. There is a multitude of characters and we are promised, amongst other things, tap-dancing noses, a cathedral choir and a dance sequence to percussion.

My partner and I were the only two members in the audience at our local cinema when the Met production was broadcast live (fairly) recently.
I hope the ROH production is a little better attended!

      1. Did you enjoy it?
      2. Will the ROH offering be in the cinemas?

On balance, probably just about yes.
The production was visually very interesting, with lots going on (so much so that you couldn't possibly see it all, and of course you only saw what the cameras chose to show anyway), but I can't say that I would rush to see/hear it again. Perhaps I should have done some homework before going to it. There was some b/w footage of DSCH playing the piano as the backdrop at one point.
        2. Will the ROH offering be in the cinemas?
No idea; sorry. (I guess their web site might say, but I haven't looked. Not very helpful, I know!)

Not sure. Two performances are being filmed, but that may be for a DVD.

It's not on the ROH cinema schedule, so it looks as if the answer is no.

It isn't going to Cinema, however it will be streamed to OperaEuropa (and possibly other places as well) on the 9th November.

Saw this in the house. It's a very enjoyable evening and definitely worth seeing. Not completely convinced by the piece or it's length or that it suits such a big space (it would be brilliant at the Komische Oper). It's a young man's work and very much of the 1920s, the absurdity, satire, and multiple styles slightly reminded me Facade though The Nose is far more brutal. Amazing to think the original Gogol story was from the 1830s. There are numerous hints at what Shostakovich was to produce later in his career and there is fun to be had playing spot the section recycled elsewhere.

The players - Martin Winkler is superb - and production make an excellent case for it. Some critics thought Kosky down-played the tragedy for the sake of laughs but I though there was a good balance of both.

For those who are interested, the complete performance of the Nose is now available on the Opera House YouTube channel:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I think these streams usually stay on line for about 30 days, so the link should work until 8 or 9 December or thereabouts.

I saw this in the theatre and was very impressed by the production. Well worth a watch

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Huge thanks for that link, Big Haddie. Rather enjoying Chris Addison's presentation at the moment. I very much hope that this gets released on disc, but for the time being this HD YouTube offering is outstanding. The audio is restricted to128kbps aac but is quite acceptable.

Much as I admire Shostakovich (and that's a very big much indeed), I hope that no one picks it for a BaL...

I didn't realize he was only 20 when he wrote it. What a snotty brat...
