New Director of Opera at the ROH

Oliver Mears, about whom I confess I know nothing. An exciting appointment, says his boss.

"It is a surprise appointment and a huge step up" according to the Guardian.

Any Ulster folk care to comment?

From the brouhaha in the comments below the Guardian piece, you'd have thought they'd hired Ray Mears.

I did see NI Opera's The Turn of the Screw at the Buxton Festival in 2012, and very good it was.

        Short Wikipedia article.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Whilst in no way wanting the unadventurous Met approach I hope he doesn't have the Holten fetish (as it seemed) for on stage sex + totally unnecessary violence

The comments prompted me to look up his production of Macbeth, currently being borrowed by WNO

I'm no longer so outraged that they aren't bringing it here...

              No Rape of Lucretia then?

Oliver Mears's production of Rigoletto at Nevill Holt Opera this summer was marvellous - a very promising sign, I'd say.
