    Johan Botha RIP

    I learned on In Tune this afternoon the sad news that has died at the age of 51. He was apparently suffering from cancer, but appeared to be in remission: he sang Siegmund in July and sang as recently as 3 weeks ago for a cancer charity gala in Cape Town. A very sad loss at such a young age. His size perhaps prevented him from being the most natural of actors, but he was a fine singer - I last heard him as part of a wonderful cast for a memorable Frau Ohne Schatten at the ROH in 2014.

        That is sad news indeed - a great voice, I heard him in the earlier Die Frau ohne S. under Dohnanyi 15 years ago, and in other things besides (e.g. Das Lied von der Erde, I think - though I can't recall where or when). A real ringing purity to the sound he made - rare, and will be much missed.

          Indeed - I saw him in the 2009 Lohengrin mentioned in the ROH tribute. Wonderful voice. 51 - very sad.

            Botha was Solti's tenor soloist in that unforgettable Beethoven 9 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Proms in 1996, also Solti's last Prom. This was the only time I saw him.

            Caliban might be thinking of a Proms Das Lied in 2008 under Runnicles which I think ended up on a BBC MM CD.

              It certainly was - Vol 18, No2 (with Karen Cargill the Mezzo).

                I too was there for that Prom in 1996, when Solti conducted Beethoven 9 in the Albert Hall, with Botha as tenor soloist, and a wonderful first half of Bruckner motets under Jane Glover. A great concert. Otherwise, my increasingly distracted brain leads me to recall no other concerts that I attend with him, but I'm sure I did

                Anyway, to lose a talent at such an early age is very sad.
