New Parsifal at Bayreuth July 25th

There`s a new production of Parsifal opening this year`s Bayreuth festival, and it`s being streamed live on the web and carried to cinemas in certain European countries but not in the UK. It is however being broadcast on 3Sat (on Astra 19.2) on Saturday 30th July.

I shall certainly be recording it on 3Sat. A least they seem to have found a conductor with Hartmut Haenchen being announced as last-minute replacement for Andris Nelsons after his disagreements with the management. Various explanations on German news sites.

Didn't know about Nelsons - how disappointing. I was looking forward to hearing him again - his CBSO parsifal last year was tremendous.

This is going to cause confusion - 3SAT showing Parsifal and Sky Arts showing Götterdämmerung live on the same day!
The Parsifal on 3SAT will be shaown at 20.15 (German Time - 19.15 British) Right in the middle of the Götterdämmerung Act 2!
Yikes, separate recorders and satellite dishes needed.

I can't believe that the Bayreuth management would sanction this.

I very much hope it's not duff information! I'm intending to use my own dish for the Parsifal and my parents Sky set up for the Ring then put everything onto dvd for (a) posterity and (b) the Wagner Society Library!

Sky are showing Rheingold and Walkure on 30 July, when Parsifal is on 3SAT. However, Rheingold and Walkure are repeated on Sunday morning before Siegfried and Gotterdammerung are shown, so there is no clash.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Thanks LHC - got the days mixed up, but I still say that the Bayreuth people have mucked it up. Feast or Famine!

The New York Times has this generally positive review of the new Bayreuth Parsifal:

One wonders what objections that Nelsons had to the production, unless, if I remember Manuel Brug in one of his blog posts, that AN leaving the production was really about Thielemann being overbearingly present during rehearsals.

Apparently Mr Thielemann was reported as saying that he and AN "were almost friends" - which made me laugh. At any event, Haenchen has won quite a few media plaudits for his conducting and, judging by Bavarian Radio`s relay on Monday, with justification.

Been reading various reviews - English and German. Very mixed. Isis themed staging has not appealed to all. Out on Saturday but I've pressed the record button for 3Sat and am really looking forward to making my own judgment.

One other positive review is in Opera News:

AFAICT, this reviewer doesn't see this production as "ISIL/ISIS-themed", but rather sees a blending of different religions in the Middle East.

A recent NYT article on Andris Nelsons tries to drop a hint (or maybe stir the pot):

"Was Mr. Nelsons, who sees “Parsifal” as a fundamentally Christian drama, disturbed by the Islamic imagery in Uwe Eric Laufenberg’s staging, as some suggested?"
FWIW, you can go to John Storgards' Twitter feed, and scroll down to the August 1 picture of JS with AN. Take note of what AN is wearing about his neck:

                      Therein may lie a clue.
