Glyndebourne Festival 2017

The line-up for next year's festival has been announced even before this year's has kicked-off:

La traviata - Verdi - LPO -Richard Farnes/Andrés Orozco-Estrada (two runs)
Hamlet - Brett Dean - LPO - Vladimir Jurowski (new commission)
Adriadne auf Naxos - Strauss - LPO - Cornelius Meister
La clemenza di Tito - Mozart - OAE - Robin Ticciati
Don Pasquale - Donizetti - LPO - Giacomo Sagripanti

I quite fancy seeing the new work Hamlet, not least because Jurowski is conducting. I no nothing of the Cavalli, is it worth a punt?

Actually, this isn't surprising for opera companies that operate in a concentrated festival format. Here in the US, Santa Fe Opera runs its season from July to late August, but they announced the 2017 Santa Fe Opera season just this past late April.

IMHO, just about anything that tickles your fancy, especially if it's far-from-standard repertoire, is worth a punt. If William Christie believes in it, that counts for something. Likewise, the new Hamlet opera is definitely of interest, even if I'm of a mixed mind about Brett Dean's music from other experiences.

With the time for The Proms getting closer, what would be of interest, to look ahead one year, is to guess which 2017 Glyndebourne production will be the 2017 Glyndebourne Prom. Ideally, it would be an offbeat work, like Hipermestra or Hamlet. However, in the current climate, what is more likely is a more popular choice. My bet would be La traviata, because:

a. After this year's Glyndebourne Prom (The Barber of Seville), I think that it'll be time to "get serious" in the next go-round.
b. La traviata has actually never been done complete at The Proms.

Admittedly, La clemenza di Tito could be a dark-horse choice, if only to ensure that Glyndebourne's music director is on the RAH podium for the Glyndebourne Prom next year. Given the advance planning involved for The Proms, the decision was probably made a good while back. Perhaps the 2017 selection was Edward Blakeman's choice during his interim tenure.

For many years it was the tradition at Glyndebourne that Sir George Christie would announce the following year's line-up from the front of the stage after the end of the final performance of the season.

After seeing that list I wish now I'd spent a bit more on tickets for this season (though I share bluestateprommer's opinion of William Christie).

Can we be sure that it will be given complete at Glyndebourne? Many conductors/ producers still make cuts in what is not a particularly long opera!

I think La Clemenza di Tito is a very fine opera, if one can get past the lengthy recitatives composed by Süssmayr (heavily cut in the recordings by Kertesz and Gardiner). I'd be surprised if it were a choice for the Proms though; I agree that La Traviata is more likely.

The Ariadne production was far from well received when it was launched three years ago so I am surprised it is being given another airing. The other offerings don't really attract me too much although the Donizetti - already seen - is still an attraction. I'm still trying to get past the memory of the ENO production of La Traviata which had one chair and a few curtains as the set design.
Hopefully Glyndebourne will push the boat out...

Traviata was performed at the Proms by Glyndebourne with Haitink and Cotrubas sometime in the 80s - the Proms archive does not include it! I will check prospectuses at home later!
