    Met Otello R3 23.4.16

Did anyone else listen to this? I caught up with it on iplayer and enjoyed it a lot. The Otello, Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko, was a mite disappointing, strained at times and with a somewhat harsh edge (not just in places where harshness was demanded!), but I was impressed by the singing of Zeljko Lukic as Iago and Hibla Gerzmava as Desdemona. And the Met orchestra was again excellent under the direction of Adam Fischer, emphasising what a superb opera this is and one of the best musical settings of any Shakespeare work that I know.

I listened & very much agree with you about the Otello - very disappointing.

He was of course in Cav and Pag at the ROH in December. He was obviously struggling at the General, and was replaced for more than one of the shows in the run (including the one I went to). Yet another singer who has pushed the voice to destruction?
