My eyes (from a favourite standing place whose view into the pit & modest pricing compensate for the lopsided view of maybe 3/4 of the stage at best) and ears noted that for the closing "Odesli" the tuba player swapped to a cimbasso. Does anyone know if this is common performance practice or perhaps another element of restoring Janacek's original intentions from others' subsequent "improvements"? There's no obvious indication in the UE score which just continues to say "tuba". It certainly heightened the impact of those final heavy brass punctuations - gleaming.

As I understand it, there are two editions in use. An early revision version by Karel Kovarovic (which is still used in Germany and by which the work became known) and a restored version by Charles Mackerras and John Tyrell which attempts to get back to the original and which is what you will have heard. You may have the other score.

Perhaps those in the know already know, but for those who don't already know, Opera Vision has a video stream of the new ROH Jenufa available through 9 November 2021:

Saw this last night, Mattila and Grigorian were tremendous. The staging was striking and mostly successful in my eye (though the floor strewn with mattresses is nearly as much an operatic cliche as the long leather coat, the thrown chair, or the holding up the scenery pose). A memorable evening.

Just listened on Radio Three - overwhelming . Nothing else to say - what a cast . And with the benefit of intelligent (and diplomatic ) introductions and analysis of this wonderful opera .

I will have to remember to avoid this thread. I have not listened yet and want to hear it 'fresh'.

Isn't the ROH streaming it? I thought that was the case.

Yes, it’s also now available on the Opera House’s streaming service, as well as on the Operavision site and it’s Youtube channel. I did use the Opera House stream to watch it again, but it is still on Operavision until 9 November.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Jenufa - Great Operatic Disasters moment

I've probably shared this before but anyway...

The last of my three live Jenufas was at Hall for Cornwall, English Touring Opera in 2006. I had a seat near the front. at the side of the proscenium arch which had a flimsy 'filler', presumably because the touring set was narrower than this hall's stage. A small gap between the two gave me an unusual plot insight when I saw Jenufa, offstage, handing her baby to the Kostelnička so she could run onstage and drown it!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Are you sure it wasn’t an example of pretentious Regietheater making a profound sub-Freudian point about Jenufa’s psychological motivation ?

OK, I'll have to think that insight through very carefully...

When I went to the rehearsal of the current Meistersinger production at Covent Garden I couldn’t work out whether the on stage black clad stage hands were part of the production or just the result of last minute hitches . It was only when I went to a performance that I had my fears confirmed that the director “meant “ it . Whatever “it” was ….
