It's a shock to see Belohlavek without his trademark hair. One hopes there aren't any health issues related to it. OTOH, he is 70 this year, so....

Ah, if we'd both worn a rose and carried an FT we could have waved at each other! I love Janacek's operas, I luxuriate in the lush score for the orchestra and the exquisite pain of watching the psychodrama unfold. I'd seen the five-star reviews for this production but I didn't expect it to be as sensational as it was. Grigorian has a gorgeous clear voice, and Mattila nailed her arias not just musically but with real passion. She must have the lungs of an ox! I was glad to see the warmth and enthusiasm of the audience at the end -- I think the cast were quite affected (though probably had the same for previous performances).

Very much so; indeed, I found it quite overwhelming, and Mattila and Grigorian were both sensational. I enjoyed the production more than I thought I would having seen some of the reviews.

My first Jenufa was the Lyubimov production at Covent Garden when it was new in 1986, which was also very powerful and quite unlike anything else I had seen before. Its probably 15 years since I last saw it (Amanda Roocroft in David Alden's production for ENO), but its amazing how quickly you get back into Janacek's unique soundworld.

I did find it amusing to think as I was reading the programme on the way home, that my day had started with listening to your BAL on the Merry Widow, and ended with reading your programme note on Jenufa.

Perhaps we need a special FOR3 flag for such occasions, so we can recognise fellow forumites when out and about!

It was a busy day in London for me yesterday –but a wonderful way to end it with Jenufa. Thanks for reading the note –it's always so nice when people actually notice these things!

My first Jenufas came just before yours: 1. Pountney's for WNO in about 1975 (on tour in Manchester) with Josephine Barstow, Pauline Tinsley et al with Richard Armstrong conducting. 2. At about the same time I saw the pre-Lyubimov ROH one (tidied up by Pountney again), with Wendy Fine and Amy Shuard, conducted by Charles Mackerras. Both were wonderful –a pretty stunning introduction to this glorious opera. Some terrific ones since, including Glyndebourne which knocked me sideways (in a good way).
