But this is by no means bad news for K.H. Having worked at the ROH can only enhance his prestige, plus his children will be growing up in a much nicer and more civilised city than London.
When you go to the ROH
do you go in on Floral Street or Bow Street?

OK, well I think you need to read beyond the headline and look at the statements of Holten, Pappano and Beard. I don't think you can possibly read it as constructive dismissal if you do.

Unless of course you mean that they asked him to stay for another 5 years, and he agreed to stay for another 15 months.
            Which I'm guessing you don't.

So you are saying that Kasper Holten, Sir Antonio Pappano and Alex Beard have all lied and that the Royal Opera House has published their conspiratorial lie with approval.

Lovely. I'm glad we're clear. Shall I contact the lawyers or will you?

I suppose the scepticism expressed - in which I do not share - is founded on the fact quite often statements of a similar nature are issued when it turns out the parties in fact have been at daggers drawn when they publish their memoirs etc .

You may be right about the reason for the scepticism. But it would have been possible to couch such a situation in vague platitudes. Here there has been specific mention of the offer of a five-year extension, as well as to KH's reasons for leaving. I simply do not believe that the parties in this case would just make that stuff up and publish it officially. And I think that prommer is on very dodgy ground in insinuating that that is what they have done.

                      No it wasn't.

(It wasn't an 'artistic disaster' at all)

KH's production of Onegin must count as an artistic and a COMMERCIAL disaster - if CG's current frantic flyer-ing is anything to go by.

Failing at the box office with 'core repertoire' is a pretty heinous sin these (or any) days. If that 'trick' was repeated on the likes of Boheme, Traviata, etc, you can imagine what the fall-out would be.

I say this in full knowledge that the forthcoming Jones Boheme will probably upset a lot of people but will (almost certainly) be embraced in the long-term. It's interesting how opera production has now come round to the ideas Jones was upsetting people with in the mid-90s.

                          .
First night: sold out. 2nd night: 7 tickets left. Last night: 9 tickets left. There ARE plenty of top price seats left for the days between Christmas and New Year and just after New Year, but Cav/Pag has been a slow seller in that period too.

This is a dance in which everyone is expected to play their part. Agreeing what the line is. Going through the motions. All honour satisfied.

But Holten is out. In with the new!

I am going to order the Copenhagen Ring asap, as I keep hearing good things about it. Maybe KH will be able to revive it personally?

                                So: what about successors?
