Came in late during the first act & thought 'Is this Tristan & Isolde in French? Stayed with it until part-way through the second act, thought I'd rather have the real thing, but put on Purcell's Welcome to all the pleasures instead.

I was intrigued by this, as I'm rather fascinated by poor old Ernest C who had a rather saddening life and unfortunate cycling end in a town I know, but who produced some terrific music despite his self-doubts. Did some investigating in advance, listening to parts of the Erato recording
Heard the opening of the broadcast this evening and some of the rest, but as so often, the vocal weaknesses on display at least in the radio transmission of the performance prevented enjoyment and prolonged listening. There sounded to be some good stuff going on in the orchestra pit though!
