    Glyndebourne Festival 2016

For those who like to plan ahead, the festival for 2016 has been announced. The two new productions are:

Il barbiere di Siviglia – LSO, Enrique Mazzola
Béatrice et Béndédict – LPO, Robin Ticciati

    Revivals for:

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg – LPO, Ticciati
The Cunning Little Vixen – LSO, Jakub Hrůša
Le Nozzi di Figaro – OAE, Jonathan Cohen
A Midsummer Night’s Dream – LPO, Kazushi Ono

The Wagner and Britten are a must. Finley was sublime as Sachs the first time around. More details here:

I'll certainly be hoping to get tickets for Wagner (even though Mrs B-o-D has issued a warning about "no more Wagner!" after GFO's "Tristan" of a few years ago) and the two new productions.
The other three revivals we have already seen and have no great desire to revisit. The Janacek, especially, at 90 minutes in total length feels decidely short value for the cost of a GFO ticket.

Well, we got tickets for Meistersinger but even though I logged on an hour before release of the public tickets all the seats for Barber and Beatrice had gone. Not unsurprisingly the Vixen evening is still available at decent prices. Looks to be an almost 100% sell out season this year.
      Checking daily for returns....

I'm not sure it's fair to measure the value of opera tickets by the length of the opera being performed. Much as I love Meistersinger and Parsifal, several of my favourite operas are quite short. Vixen is most certainly of those, along with the other later Janacek operas, Strauss (Elektra, Salome), Hansel and Gretel, and plenty more... and I am happy to pay the asking price for great performances of any of those.

          - and you get more great Music per minute with Janacek than with ... well, many another opera composer!

I'm not sure I was making the time/price ratio as a general rule although I have seen Vixen at GFO and wouldn't be tempted back for the price of the tickets on offer - just a personal view. In amelioration may I add that I saw The Makropolous Case at GFO and found it one of the most wonderful productions I have ever seen.

I'm somewhat surprised to see that they are not touring with any of these, but offering Don Giovanni and Butterfly instead.

Yes, I noted that too and I don't recall a production of Butterfly at GFO before. So a new production for the GTO? As both Beatrice and the Barber were sold out pronto it would have been good to have a chance to catch them on Touring.

Do we know much about Il barbiere di Siviglia? It's in cinemas on June 21st.

Glyndebourne occasionally gives a new production a run on tour before transferring to the main festival. It happened last season with The Rape of Lucretia.

I am going to Meistersinger and to Barbiere this weekend, on 'opening weekend', in a wallet-busting treat. Couldn't be more different!

Anyone heard anything on the bush telegraph about either?

I find myself with a spare standing ticket for Die Meistersinger this coming Saturday (11th). Central standing position, price £40. Is anyone interested? Send me a PM. A chance to see Die M at a reasonable price!

So, what did you think? I was at Meistersinger last night and I enjoyed it immensely. Gerald Finley really deserved his applause, and it was good to have an Eva who looked young enough for the part. Aside from a typo in the supertitles and a slightly uncertain ending it was difficult to fault.

Liked Meistersinger, Finley even finer than in 2011. Very good, solid production but not a patch on Richard Jones' for WNO/ENO. In fact, with the exception of Finley as Sachs, I preferred that wonderful Coli production and find it has really stuck in the memory.

The Barbiere was ok, pretty, but not as funny nor as well directed as it should have been. Felt a bit forced and was relatively unoriginal. I also objected to Mrs Christie getting an interpolated, uninteresting aria which served no purpose in the last act. This was self-indulgent where we could have had Cessa di piu resistere!
