- and how what they "bring to" affects what they "take" (and, with "creators", how what they bring to what they create affects what they "give").
TS Blathers on.........Yes, absolutely. And none of it in a theoretical vacuum. I really don't see the problem with trying to apply theory, in an attempt to make sense of a production, or a production within a particular context.
Baggage Handling, perhaps?
Are you talking about tomorrow's BaL ?
Edit: Must figure out Multiple quote thing.......
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
Not that long ago, I recall reading that 'Die Soldaten' is now considered a '60s opera' and one that is highly unlikely to be revived (or premiered, in the case of the UK).
The reason being: it was written for the days when opera houses had lots of money to splash around. They don't, any more: not even, comparatively speaking, in continental Europe.
The Bavarian State Opera performed a new production of Die Soldaten in May last year and was very well received by both critics and audience. It was conducted by conductor of the moment Kirill Petrenko and starred Barbara Hannigan
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I'll say! - reading your post I thought "I didn't say that! Somebody's hijacked my posts - they're raiding my bank account this very second - they've stolen my identity - I'm going to get arrested as a member of a terrorist organization - the CIA are coming and nobody will ever know what happened to me -"
And then I calmed down.
And agreed wholeheartedly with the "none of it in a theoretical vacuum" comment - "Theory" (in its fullest sense) never is: it explains (or, at least, "explores") why "Practice" works (when it does - and why it didn't when it doesn't).

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Isn't that what MrGG has been advocating all along?
Don't think so. Whether you choose to go, pruriently, or not go, prudishly, or whatever, is your personal response. It's allowed. But if that's all there is to it, that's all there is to the director's concept - which wouldn't amount to anything very coherent.
Leave aside the question of Michieletto's rape scene or Bieito's lavatory scene - there is more to be discussed than that: namely what the director was trying to get at and how, and how far, he succeeded. Arguably, a production which only manages to convey its message to an enlightened, broad-minded few is not 100% successful …
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
Arguably, a production which only manages to convey its message to an enlightened, broad-minded few is not 100% successful …
But isn't everyone here agreed that the production has managed to "convey its message"? What those who dislike this production seem to be arguing is that the message is being imposed upon the work, not emerging from it? If the "conveyancing" is clear to most people - does that make it 87.4% successful?
(And how does the sentence I've quoted match with Beethoven's "production", the Great Fugue? Can that be described as not 100% successful because it "only manages to convey its message to an enlightened, broad-minded few"?)
