    ROH 'William Tell'

Plenty of discussion of the new production, but this is the only actual review I could find.

Theatre news and reviews from London’s West End and across the UK, latest interviews with stars and opinion leaders in the entertainment and performing arts industry, and theatre jobs. The Stage is the world’s longest-running theatre publication.

There are LOTS of online reviews - if you can bring yourself to look at Norman's 'Slipped Disc' web site.

And I suspect some of our "absent friends" in full rage mode

Shades of the "Life of Brian" Muggeridge nonsense methinks
(I haven't seen it, nor have most of those who seem to be raging about it)

      Simon, what do you think?

seems a dire review(my ticket is for a fortnight's time) - KH's Don Giovani had some full rear female nudity in a somewhat strange production but which for all its gimicks did actually work and illustrated the story quite well - good voices as well in that production.

I heard some 'insider gossip' that this production wouldn't be much liked.

Kasper Holten has established a fairly disastrous track record at Covent Garden, judging by reviews, although the only production of his I have seen (the recent Onegin) wasn't so much bad as unmemorable.

He seemed to buck the trend somewhat with his Krol Roger last month.

Now, it would seem, it's back to business as usual.

                Mea culpa!

It does sound dire. On a par - or possibly worse - than the execrable (imported) production of Rusalka a few years back.

I won't be seeing G.T. though, so will refrain from further comment.

I rather hoped that Antonio Pappano would known better after all he is not just chief condcuter of the ROH but its music director.

I was there and this was the worst production I have seen at the ROH.
Even without the Act 3 scene it is at the bottom, it's a pity much of the press is focussing on this one scene as if removing would have made it acceptable, it was just breaking point.

I won't go into detail now as there are many valid criticism elsewhere [1][2] from people that were also there, most I share.

Most worrying is the staggering stupidity from the directors and Mr Holten who said he didn't expect the reaction; to the ROH and all: the reception was entirely predictable.

Nothing novel about nudity at the ROH eg for Salome a year or two back the wardrobe costs would have been very modest. The current furore, according to R4 was/is over the raping of a girl by soldiers.

Kasper Holten is Director of Opera for The Royal Opera, either:
                        1. He thought it acceptable and so should be sacked.
                        2. He knew it was bad and chose to do nothing so should be sacked.
                        3. He didn't know about the production and so should be sacked.

                          Hiya Giacomo,

The ROH William Tell production is being relayed through the Odeon Cinemas in a few days on the 5 July. I'm in two minds now whether or not to attend now.

                            Hello,
I spent much of it with my eyes shut, as did others, unlike even Maria Stuarda I can't face a second performance just to listen.
Buy the 1972 Bacquier / Caballe / Gedda / Gardelli CD instead (if you haven't already).

Giacomo is spot on. It was a complete turkey production-wise - sorry Simon!

Even more shocking than THAT rape scene (which was revoltingly long and drawn out during the ballet music), was the cliche-ridden rest of it: characters walking on carrying suitcases (symbolism - baggage - geddit?), hilarious direction of the chorus falling down as if they had done the ring-a-ring-o-roses (sorry again Simon), chaps taking their manly shirts off pre-battle and smearing themselves with blood, AK47s, the stage covered with stage soil (metaphor!)... I could go on.

Musically, things were tip-top. But no one now wants to talk about that, do they??
