    Royal Opera 2011-12 season announced

Antonio Pappano unveiled the 2011-12 season this evening at the Royal Opera House. Very much a season of cycles to lead into the Olympics: The Ring, Il Trittico, Les Troyens and, um, Mozart/ da Ponte.

    More details here: http://www.opera-britannia.com/index...d=478&Itemid=1

Anything to excite/ tempt you here?

It's all quite exciting, but I live too far away for it to be of any personal benefit. Opera North - now that's a different matter.

      Flying Dutchman?
      Ring maybe.

Actually, looks to be playing a bit safe. Tricky times?

I expect quite a few will turn up on Radio 3 if you can't get there. Some keenly anticipated new productions ahead. I understand that details of the Ring casting are to follow.

Draco, it does look a 'safe' season in some respects, but it's certainly a good deal better than the current one, which has found me attending fewer productions than any season since I started opera-going - more new productions and some tempting casts.

Les Troyens might tempt, but it would have to be an extremely good production to match up to the Opera North / Welsh National / Scottish Opera production of 24 years ago.

(oh dear - I really shouldn't calculate how long ago things happened - too dispiriting )

I look forward to Les Troyens which I have not seen on stage since Janet Baker stood in for Joan Carlyle back in the 60s. I have heard it 4 times since then in concert. The thought of Jonas Kaufmann as Aeneas is very tempting.

Rusalka, extraordinarily, has never before been staged at the Royal Opera. Wonderful, gorgeous, romantic version of Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Mermaid" and we have Yannick Nézet-Séguin thrown in for good measure.

Jeffrey Tate returns after a very long absence from the ROH and Britain generally for Der fliegende Holländer.

I agree even if there has been no Tamerlano - this has been a disappointing season . I enjoyed the Tannhauser singing and not the production - liked Adriana Lecouvreur except for the soprano . I am going to see Nina Stemme in Fidelio but I understand that is another duff production .

Fliegende Hollander in October and Meistersinger in December, but I can't find mention of when The Ring is being staged. Does anybody know?

Depsite being a Friend of Covent Garden, I was unsuccessful in booking tickets for the complete cycle last time around. I saw Rheingold and Walkure, but it would be nice to do the whole undertaking this time.

                  Mr Pee,

I think the Ring cycle will be at the beginning of the 2012/13 season, so probably in September 2012. Apparently its going to be filmed again for release on DVD/ Blu ray.

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

< Antonio Pappano announced the new Royal Opera season, which opens with Il Trittico and concludes with The Ring (no details yet on casting for the Wagner tetralogy) >

.............and no dates, but it seems that The Ring should be in late Spring 2012 on that basis, shouldn't it?

The ROH announced it last night, but it will be in September 2012, hence no casting as yet.
