I don't think I've ever booed an opera, though I've certainly withheld applause. I, and many other Prommers, once booed Paul Watkins at the Last Night, but that was because he had been unwise enough to make some disparaging remarks about us in a national newspaper.

A late lamented friend used to tell stories of Covent Garden in the old days, before Covent Garden Market moved to Nine Elms. If he is to be believed, on one occasion Georg Solti took a bow at just the right moment to dodge a cabbage that sailed over his head.
