Fabulous voice, actor, artist. He has contributed massively to my interest in listening to opera, through his wonderful recordings.

Sad news, but of course, inevitable at some stage. RIP, Mr Bergonzi, and thank you.

Dismal response to this so far on Radio 3. I hope a decent tribute is being prepared.

Ferney is right. This collection shows his golden, honeyed voice and supreme musicianship when at the height of his powers.

        It's magnificent:

In my ealry years of discovering classical music, this name Carlo Bergonzi kept on coming up. I have heard quite a few recordings of this amazing star. Another star has gone out. RIP Carlo Bergonzi.

I should add that Petroc T did a much better job of paying tribute to Bergonzi this morning.

He never made a below par recording. Sadly, I never saw him though I know many people who did.

Indeed it is IGI http://www.amazon.co.uk/31-Tenor-Ari...ds=bergonzi+31 and what a wonderful memento mori it is!

Is it just me who finds it a little odd that dear old Alan Blyth has been disinterred to provide the obituary in the Guardian? http://www.theguardian.com/music/201...carlo-bergonzi I hope I write as well when I have been dead for seven years!

May he (nay, they both) rest in peace.

Thanks for the Alan Blyth link. I've just played a few tracks to remember him.

Quite simply my favourite tenor. Wonderful legato. My personal favourites are: Kubelik Rigoletto, Leinsdorf Macbeth, Solti Don Carlo and Serafin Puccini recordings - Butterfly and Boheme.

Couple of live performances worth hearing are: Nemorino in the Gavezzeni L'Elisir D'Amore (I've linked it to Una Furtiva Lagrima - wonderful) and the Fausta Cleva Manon lescaut with Dorothy Kirsten - linked to Tu Tu Amore Tu.

It seems that the Guardian commissioned Alan Blyth to write obituaries of all the 'golden age' opera singers (and some conductors): uniquely, as far as I am aware, they are still regularly used. His posthumous obituary-writing record can be viewed here: http://www.theguardian.com/profile/alan-blyth

Better that than an Andrew Clements write-up, I'd say.

I definitely agree - and thanks for the link!
