RVW 9, Chicago SO/Andrew Davis, WFMT radio broadcast Sunday 3/13/11

From remembering one discussion on the old R3 chat boards about the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's performance of RVW 9 this past November, with Sir Andrew Davis conducting, people here might be interested in the upcoming radio broadcast of that concert (with a bonus) from WFMT in Chicago. This is WFMT's page with the program schedule:

The broadcast time is 1-3 PM Central Daylight Time this Sunday, March 13. Normally, the time difference between Chicago and the UK is 6 hours. However, because the US starts Daylight Savings Time in the US this Sunday, the difference is 5 hours (until you folks start British Summer Time on March 27), so that I guess it would start at 6 PM UK time. I would seriously advise checking my time calculations. The openers on that concert were Turnage's Texan Tenebrae and LvB 4 (Vladimir Feltsman, pianist).

Thanks for the alert, BSP. For all questions regarding time this website is invaluable: http://www.timeanddate.com/ and I think your calculation is correct.

Yes, thanks a lot BSP I shall have recorders at the ready. But darn it, after going to some trouble to delete Windows Media Player, looks like I'll have to reinstall it to hear the broadcast, as I haven't got itunes, winamp or realplayer

Am listening now to the WFMT archived concert with RVW 9 on the brink, in a few minutes. Warning: the breaks between the works with announcer-talk are pretty minimal, so RVW 9 may hit you suddenly if you're not already tuned in. Will be interesting to hear what you guys & gals all think from across the pond.

Thanks for the reminder. Just started to grab the 128kbps mp3 stream with a couple of minutes to spare.

Any thoughts from you guys & gals on the CSO's RVW 9? Factoring in the inevitable compromises with a radio recording and compression (not to mention too-short pauses between the movements, but that was the editing of the recording and not the actual performance, I'm sure), I thought that the CSO and Sir Andrew did very well with the work. It may have been patched together from the various performances that weekend, but no matter. One hopes that other US orchestras will take up RVW 9 and others, although advocates over here are limited in number, to be sure.

If you missed this broadcast you might be interested to know that you can find a better quality stream on the Chicago Symphony website. Find the Listen and Watch page and you can then listen to the last six weeks of wfmt CSO broadcasts, streamed at 256 kbps and if you use Real Player.....
