You have half a supporter in this review, dashers http://www.classicalsource.com/db_co...w.php?id=11769 but the Kalinnikov came off much better ('underrated gem'?), even if the Khachaturian didn't.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yes, I concede ff, that I was over-harsh when throwing the baby Kalinnikov out with the Khachaturian bathwater. But, the context demanded a strong work in its second half & not a minor gem.

I have yet to listen to the concert but am looking forward to hearing what Hamelin, the LPO and Vanska made of that big juicy lollipop the Khachaturian Piano Concerto. My there are some right old stuff-shirt comments on this thread. Where's member Katin to put a word in for the work?

Well,a big from me for the Khatchytunien.I thought at 54:00 in we were going to have the Love Theme from Spartacus, as the strings started to swell and surge.

Great fun! Very special encore from M-AH as well.

For once I'm not on your wavelength, Tavers, it was a real treat to hear the LPO in these seldom programmed works.

In fairness perhaps I'm not really much of a Vanska fan so it's harder for me to accept your 'inappropriate' argument!

In sum a rather good mix of works and performers IMHO.

I wondered whether that was one of Godowsky's arrangements - the Minute Waltz. I am very fond of the Khachaturian Concerto but that performance was disappointing and showed the joins . Just try Lympany on Decca in 1952 - brilliant .

I enjoyed the Kalinnikov . It is a lovely work and deserves to be played much more often. I don't think this was a dumbed down programme at all - it was a refreshing change just a shame the Khachaturian did not come off .

Agreed, or if you can find a transfer without horrible wow and flutter problems, Peter Katin and the LSO under Hugo Rignold. The source of the lack of subtlety, I feel, was Hamelin. He played all the notes, and in the right order, but ... . I don't think I have ever heard the first movement dragged out so much, for a start.

Ah - you've made a good point. I did dream at one point in the first movement that I'd just heard the slow movement.

Yes -I agree - I don't know Peter Katin's recording but both Kapell's legendary record and Lympany on Decca have much more fizz .

It was very much his own! But, wow, what extraordinary dexterity; just amazing!

If it had been one of Godowsky's then at least there would have been an excuse for such self-regarding musical vandalism .
