The Tallis Fantasia is one of RVW's masterpieces, and a much better piece than the Norfolk Rhapsody. Yes, the Concerto Academico would have been a pleasant change from the ever-ascending Lark, but that work in a live concert is adorable, and, with these well-known masterworks in the programme, Manze gave himself and his orchestra plenty of time to rehearse Job - and what dividends this strategy amply repaid!

On the evidence of this concert, Job is clearly a masterwork and as others have remarked, Andrew Manze has got RVW's music coursing through his veins.

So how often does this astonishing work turn up at the Henry Wood BBC Proms?

It has not been programmed since 2008 when Sir Andrew Davis did a mighty all-RVW evening and only once more in the 2000s. Not once in the 1990s and only once each in the 1980s, 1970s, 1950s and 1940s.

Surely it's time to invite Andrew Manze and his Scottish chums to revisit it one Proms year soon, together with Serenade to Music and Symphony no 9 - or perhaps in a more 'continental' programme?

        Any thoughts?

yes, memories of tears flowing during RVW 5 at the proms on the telly! What a brilliant evening that was. Manze and his Scottish chums should do the complete set of everything by RVW. that should keep em busy for the next 10 years but it would be so worth it.

until the PTB see sense and follow your suggestions, here is a reminder of that great concert.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

The other 2 symphonies from the concert are available too I think.

Oh yes it was... I was fortunate to be there, perfectly seated, and it was one of the best ever. Happily I was also at the "Job" Prom a few years before that. Some very special VW sessions at the RAH. Unforgettable.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

The chief executive of the CBSO,Stephen Maddock, joked that although they put The Lark Ascending before the interval,he hoped that the audience would hang around for the second half.

Indeed Cali! I was at the Sir Andrew Davis Prom conducting Job. That was a special performance, for me! I hope he reocrds a RVW cycle!

It's been around for some time, (since April 2008 in this package, according to amazon.co.uk), is pretty good, and will not damage the bank balance too much.

OK, but wouldn't top my list with many of them.

Yes - I'd leap at it if I saw it at a ridiculously low price in a Charity shop, but otherwise ...

(I thought Bbm already had the set!)

Yes, I have that cycle. I quite like the wqay AD interprets RVW. One of my favourite conductors too, ofcourse Boult, Handley and Hickox too.

Sounds a bit like Wilson, Keppel & Betty

The version with the good music. If you enjoy this, check out my clip of the "Hallam Hawaiian Players".
