The BBC Philharmonic continues its contribution to Manchester's 'Strauss's Voice' festival with an all-Strauss programme conducted by Vassily Sinaisky with soprano Susan Gritton. The programme begins with a depiction of one of history's great lovers, goes on to include seven of his most ravishing songs, including a wedding present to his wife and a cradle song for their baby son, and the concert ends with an orchestral portrait of domestic life - with all the highs and lows!

I am going tonight. There is a change Susan Gritton is ill and is being replaced by Aga Mikolaj.
One song has been removed from the program and the running order is:

Das Rosenband, Wiegenlied, ,Morgen, Winterweihe, Waldseligkeit, Das Dichters Abengang. Muttertandelei has been removed and all the songs will be performed before the interval.

At 7 p.m. students from the RNCM will perform Strauss's Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments in the foyer.

Not as such (putting aside various questions of definition!) - I was there, having never heard it live before.

Teriffic showpiece for the brass - not to mention timp scales...

Great fun, the finale a proper romp.

The songs in the first half were rather trashed by a bizarre incident in the circle. Less said the better...

Bit surprised it wasn't picked up by the mics - shouldn't have mentioned it otherwise. Not amusing - either just very bizarre or the result of some sort of medical condition presumably...

A woman started making, er, rude noises toward the stage, saying things in a loud voice during the pauses and the music, flashing a torch at the stage, was spoken to by an usher, eventually stormed out noisily...

I -think- these were the best performances of Strauss's orchestral songs so far in this series, but it was impossible to focus through all that.

edge - I'm constantly surprised by what turns on (or not) - makes boarders boreders! I guess you'd have no problem wading through Bax or Rubbra symphonies which for me 'go on a bit'!

There was similar 'audience participation' at the rear of the stalls - a couple talking loudly, often at the worst possible moments. I didn't see any usher intervention there (although the multiple looks from other audience members should have been enough) and they stayed through to the end. A couple next to me commented that they'd been at last week's concert and had been noisy then too. I did wonder, like Simon, whether a medical condition was at the root of this. BBC Phil concerts seem to be particularly plagued by noisy audiences, far more so than Hallé concerts for some reason. The audience last night was disappointingly small tool, at least downstairs.

This forum saddo was entertaining guests, but recorded the concert for later listening - better listening via the hi-fi than via a computer.

Sorry to hear of Simon B's experience. It rather shatters my illusions of the considerate Manchester audiences, but there will always be one bad egg. Good to know the ushers tried to do something about it - something that doesn't seem to happen at the RAH.

I was in the hall in the choir circle and thankfully wasn't aware of any disturbance. I did enjoy the concert very much. I thought the singer Aga Mikolaj was excellent; she was a new name to me.
