it would be nice if they kept these performances forever, but I don't suppose they can
Radio 3 broadcast recordings celebrating Richard Strauss's 150th anniversary.

I just listened to the opening of Zarathustra. Did somebody actually clap after the sunrise introduction?

Yes. A few rows from the front - mere feet from where 6' of Spanish bloke was still waving a stick around. And from where the R3 announcer had just moments before, gone on at some length about the many sections of ASZ. The perp's mind, or what passes for it, must have been in neutral...

an understandable mistake, after all that's where the piece ends in the film

Such clapping are mistakes that happen. On another note I am at home listening to and enjoying my new recording of Eine Alpensinfoinie by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich conducted by David Zinman.

Many thanks to Eine Alpinesinfonie for the excellent recommendation.

But no tribute was paid to Claudio Abbado who the Halle introduced to a British audience in 1966. A sad omission. Over many years of attending concerts in Manchester, this was the first time that the death of a major figure in classical music went unacknowledged.

Why not drop them an e-mail about it ? Maybe they have forgotten their links with him - better if they do it late than never .

The programmes would have been printed by then.

No doubt there will be future opportunities to acknowledge this great man.

That has not stopped tributes being paid in the past.

No I'm afraid I don't. I didn't arrive in Manchester until 1971. I was aware, having been told by a number of Halle concert goers, that it happened and CFM had the 1966 date in its tribute to him.

Abbado's Hallé début was actually on the 7th November 1965 (also his English début). He conducted a suite from Prokofiev's Chout, Dvořák's Eighth Symphony, and Chopin's E minor Piano Concerto (also Martha Argerich's début).

Good detective work there, Flay, thanks. Interesting programme and to see the Abbado/Argerich partnership at an early stage. One of his earliest recordings was of the Prokofiev while his final one will shortly be released - Mozart with Argerich.
