A fine first half even if some of Maestro Barenboim's tempo fluctuations are slightly extreme. Great sound coming through my speakers via the TV hooked up to my hi-fi, easily the best I've heard from this event.

Agreed. fine performances as always, but the sound is an example of what broadcasters should be proud.
I have not heard the VPO play better since the last Kleiber NYD concert in 1992. I was not aware of any extreme tempi, as one who played this music for many years, I can say that DB has managed without effort to find the right "schwung" tempi.
Only when this music is played for dancing is it necessary to keep it in a much more strict time, other the conductors or Orchestra leaders have full licence.
One only has to look at the faces of the musicians to see that they are really with him and are enjoying it immensely.
That has not always been the case.
