    New Year's Day Concert 2014

This looks a fine programme and am greatly looking forward to what will be my 43rd NYDC.

Don't forget that the entire concert is being broadcast live on Radio 3 as well as on BBC Red Button channel 301 starting at 10.15. The second half is on BBC2 with the concert being repeated on BBC4 at 19.00. Adventurous types can catch the Austrian Radio broadcast on ORF1.

Just wish we didn't have to put up with the ballet sequences, though having said that some of them can be very good.

Two of my very favourite Strauss waltzes here in Dynamiden and Seid Umschlungen Millionen plus my favourite Strauss overture - Waldmeister.

Yes lovely to see a proper Overture open part II.

Barenboim is far from my favourite conductor but I'm looking to enjoy this one.

Any news on 2015 conductor ? Anyone but FWM please !

The Tales from the Vienna Woods is another favourite here. And a lovely tribute to Richard Strauss with the opening to Capriccio.

Personally, I wish that the programme would leave anniversary composers out of it and leave the field to the Strauss's and friends.

There is, of course, another Richard Strauss connection in that he stole the main theme of Josef's Dynamiden for his own Rosenkavalier waltzes.

How much does the conductor of the day have to do with deciding the programme?

Heard DB on the radio saying he'd more or less devised it himself.

When did the practice of including anniversary composers start to kick in, Pet ?

Abbado was the first to do this in 1991 (Mozart). That concert began with Rossini's Thieving Magpie Overture, not sure why as his anniversary was the next year.

Can we have Georges Pretre again please? Not sure if he is still conducting.

Or is there any other genial old cove with a bit of schwung about him who could be dusted down?

Totally agree: I loved the Pretre concerts. I think he has been conducting the VPO de temps en temps.

I don't know if Bernard Haitink is a 'genial old cove' (probably) and I doubt if he'd want to do it, but he gave such a good performance of Voices of Spring with the VPO at the 2012 Proms that I could easily imagine him tackling this event.

I see it's Zubin Mehta for 2015. Based on 2007, that's fine by me.

Interesting that the Strauss family are "Strauß", while Richard is "Strauss".

Fine by me too, Alison. I remember him conducting the VPO in Josef Strauss's Delirien Waltz at a Barbican concert as an encore in 1983.

Just caught the first line of Petroc's intro - "Sponsored by Rolex". Whit? On the BBC??
