I wonder if Alison will be able to get a ticket?

Maria Pires will be a delight but she won't get much support from the old boy.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

How odd - Pires was originally slated to perform at this concert and others with Abbado performing K271 but was then replaced by Argerich - and now she has replaced martha !

There's a possibility that the Southbank Centre might have booked Haitink and Pires as a back up insurance policy as there would always be some uncertainty about Abbado and Argerich turning up. The programme went through several modifications as well.

In the event I'm well pleased even though I am a big Abbado fan, having Haitink as substitute is a masterstroke.

                  It certainly drove Argerich away

Argerich is a serial canceller and as such I've little time for artists who treat the paying public in this way. There were also three changes of programme before she was satisfied enough to include the one she won't be playing .

I've been blighted by cancellations and programme changes recently. Andriss Nelsons was supposed to be performing Brahms's Schicksalslied as the entree before the German Requiem in February at the RFH - this has now been changed to something else. Infuriating, as I was as excited about hearing this as I was the Requiem. And so long in advance - couldn't they get this right before advertising it?

Then a cancellation of a recent Sunday morning concert at Wigmore Hall - different quartet, completely different programme. Wigmore Hall seem happy to refund tickets, so that's okay.

Indeed. I've been caught out. This is interesting, I've heard it before. She doesn't technically cancel, because she never signs a contract. This is no excuse of course.

I forgive her everything for the wonderful festivals that she organises and where she permits recordings to be made and released at mid-price so that others might share her joyful music-making and that of her friends and her younger colleagues whose careers she is nurturing.

                          Fascinating article, many thanks RT
