    Verdi Requiem

I am listening to tonight's concert from the Edinburgh Festival.

I am completely bowled over by the vocal quartet

I have always thought that Lennie Bernstein's recording was unbeatable, but these singers tonight are absolutely fantastic.

The orchestra under Donald Runnicles are providing a really meaningful accompaniment and so far the chorus are rising to the occasion.

    What a stunning experience!

You MUST hear this - even if it means sciving off from work - it is that good.

The soloists that have pleased HS so much are:

    Erin Wall (Soprano)
    Karen Cargill (Mezzo)
    Bryan Hymel (Tenor)
    Eric Owens (Bass)

    plus

    Edinburgh Festival Chorus
    BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
    Donald Runnicles (Conductor)

Didn't get to it in Edinburgh, but yes, it is excellent. The soprano is especially good. The Festival Chorus are/is always exceptional.

Thanks for the encouragement HS, I look forward to listening to it.

I think it is a great pity that the fabulous opening concert of this year's Festival, with Daniil Trifonov's astonishing performance of Prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto, plus "Alexander Nevsky", was not broadcast. Come to that, it is a pity that only three of the 21 Usher Hall concerts from the Festival have been broadcast. I fancy that we did better last year. Or am I wrong?

I hadn't realised - that seems to be very neglectful.

Donald Runnicles is an inspiring conducutor who deserves to be better known in the U.K. I have seen some of the doing sterling work he is doing with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and I understand also with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and at the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming.

I have just done a little rummaging in the Radio 3 Schedule archives. The tally for evening broadcasts from the Festival for the last few years has been:

              2009 – 5
              2010 – 7
              2011 – 5
              2012 – 3
              2013 – 3

Maybe the reduction is due to budget cuts? Whatever the reason, it is a great pity.

What a shame, David-G. Quite agree. Has this concert been put on iplayer?

One problem is that the Festival coincides with the Proms, which take priority for live broadcasts (even when the Prom is dross). 'Performance on 3' this week is recorded concerts (I assume the two 3 Choirs Festival are recorded); next week it's back to live broadcasts, so other recorded Festival concerts would have to go into 'Afternoon on 3' probably in a hacked-about form.

(Note for Runnicles fans - next week's BBCSSO concert with Runnicles conducting Mahler's 5th + Mahler songs with Thomas Hampson is not being broadcast - as I will not be able to go &was hoping to hear it via the radio. I expect it will be broadcast in bits one - or more - afternoon)

Indeed,it is, Flossie! The concert will be broadcast 'live' from Perth Concert Hall, R3, 19.30hrs, Friday, 20 Sept: BBCSSO/Runnicles, with Thos Hampson as soloist in the Mahler Songs. Prog starts with Britten - The Building of the House (Overture) and concludes with Mahler 5.

                      Instant diary note.

Thanks Stanley; listening on the radio isn't the same as being there, but there would have been a 'domestic' if I'd insisted.

(Come to think of it I could go to Perth ...)

No brass left after the Proms!

I've often thought that in the era of iplayer that rather than repeating Proms in the Ao3 slot that once EIF has started that the time could be allocated to giving us a few of those concerts.

That'd make the Verdi Requiem rather quieter.

                            - Excellent suggestion, cloughie. I often think that they who must be obeyed at R3 are out of their depth when dealing with "new" technology - poorly under-use of i-Player, crude over-reliance on Twitter.

I have a feeling that there used to be more broadcasts from the EIF evening concerts (I mean going back several years before the years listed by David-G), but I can't put an average figure on it. At least there were quite a few broadcasts from the Queens Hall this year. I agree that it is a great pity we do not hear more from the EIF - and I also wish they would push the boat out and make a recording of one of the drama performances, e.g. Beckett's All That Fall, nearly 60 years after its broadcast on the Third Programme.
