Did anyone hear that lovely Haydenesque quartet yesterday by Hyacinthe Jadin, a composer I had never heard of before?

If you would have looked at the "What are you listening now" thread, you would have known

The Jadin was the slightly more interesting piece. Being composed at the same time as Beethoven's opus 18 set, listening especially to the scherzo raises the question "What if?" Well written and less influenced by Mozart than its reference to the latter's K465 suggests.

TtN broadcasts Jadin from time to time, btw.

The David was interesting for its own definitely romantic style, without showing much influences from contemporary (quartet- or otherwise) composers. Well written too.

Anyone catch the Bavouzet lunchtime recital today? I only heard the 3 Debussy studies and Isle Joyeuse but boy can he play!

Irritating that the Bavouzet lunchtime recital mentioned above has its encore L'Isle Joyeuse excised from the iPlayer recording. An error or Beeb policy not to include encores? Such a shame as it was the finest performance I've ever heard.

It was included in the original iPlayer 'Listen Again' offering but was cut when that was replaced by the Sunday repeat version of the programme. PM me if you want to hear it again, as originally posted.

York Bowen's Rhapsody Trio: Monday 15 June

Only just over ten minutes at the beginning of the concert but I enjoyed this. It made a nice change from trio sonatas by Schmeltzer et.al. too.

Modern songs are not something I know very much about but I thought this was very good. It was something akin to a solo cantata. Unpretentious and very moving

Yes.

Well 'La voix humaine' is, in my opinion,a far more rewarding work than the first piece on offer ('La dame de Monte Carlo'). However, given that after 5 minutes you did not feel it worth continuing to listen, you arguably saved yourself a good 45 minutes to do something more worthwhile. Surely it is fine, at least some of the time, to say 'No, this is not doing it for me' and leave the music/film/book/exhibition or whatever else it might be?

I decided to stay the course although distracted by the operatic performance of Anna Caterina Antonacci, an artist I usually admire. The bar was set for me in the late70s when Elisabeth Soderstrom sang the role of the Woman in La voix humaine at the QEH, London Sinfonietta/Simon Rattle, with a desperate humanity at its root and have, subsequently, waited long for its equal. The other half of the programme was a delicious and witty performance of Ravel's L'enfant et les sortileges

I think we all have occasions when we are just not in the right frame of mind. Sometimes it takes a long time to come to love a piece of music, as discussed elsewhere. Glad you are going to give 'la voix humaine' another go.

Today's lunchtime concert.... Well it isn't a concert , is it ?

Some great music , interesting mix with some rarely heard items from quality performers.
All thoroghly messed around and turned into a dogs dinner for no obviously good reason.
