I went to the final concert in the 'Tchaikovsky in miniature' mini-series. Both pieces were enjoyable but didn't, for me, seem like very co-hesive works. I thought the Copland started off rather 'modern' - not at all my image of Copland - but then became rather 'jazzy'. With Tchaikovsky's Trio the two movements were both good listening but didn't seem to go together as a whole (the second movement, the variations, seemed to go on a bit ). Perhaps because Tchaikovsky was reluctant to write it, not liking the instrumental combination. It might also have been the performers; they only got together as a trio in 2012 & seemed a bit 'fidgety' together, not settled down as a group (unlike the Brodskies - you could see they were communicating with each other, but very smoothly).

Listening to it again later I was struck by the difference in the balance betwen the instruments. In the hall the piano was very dominant - it was like a performance for piano with accompanying strings, rather than the three instruments being equal partners (which is my interpretation of what a trio would be - perhaps I'm wrong). On the radio the piano was much less dominant.

Anybody have thoughts about todays lunchtime concert , which was bits of recitals by Christian Zacharias.

He had some interesting things to say at the start. I have to say that the piano sound in the Haydn B minor Sonata rather ruined what sounded like an otherwise good performance.

Not easy to get a great and authentic sound in a church on a modern piano, but I thought that the resonance of both the piano and perhaps the acoustic just got thoroughly in the way, turning too many of those phrases to mud. Shame.

I actually thought this was also the case, though to a lesser extent , in the Schubert. One could hear the Moments Musicaux too often....

Agree about the Haydn. When I thought it was bits of different recitals I groaned - & hoped that chopped-up concerts in the manner of Aon3 isn't going to become the norm for the Lunchtime Concert.

Only Moday from Wigmore hall seems to survive intact these days, at least when I am listening.

I don't understand this obsession with chopping concerts up. And , given that they must record more than they broadcast, I don't know why something like that Haydn survives quality control.

Which, altogether, is rather a lot of assumptions.

This programme is allocated just one hour in the schedule. This is the usual length of lunchtime concerts in "real-life" and so "real-life" lunchtime concerts, live and recorded, seem to be usually broadcast as whole concerts. However, many concerts, such as Festival recordings, are longer than an hour (and aren't all recorded at lunchtime), and it seems that these are stripped in episodes across the week, to create programmes of an hour's duration.

But in fact, the Lunchtime concert is really just part of Ao3, so , given that they know how long the pre recorded concerts are, its a bit of a doddle to integrate a full concert seamlessly into Ao3.

              or it ought to be.

all seems a bit self defeating to me.

And all's for the best in the best of all possible worlds

There are surely enough lunchtime concerts to record for broadcast at lunchtime without chopping them up? (& in the past programmes from the various festivals have usually been broadcast for Aon3)

Morzart, Beethoven & Haydn on Fortepiano: 19 May

Live from Wigmore Hall in London, Dutch fortepianist Ronald Brautigam performs sonatas by the great triumvirate of Classical-period masters: Mozart's youthful Sonata in G K283, Beethoven's stormy Sonata in C minor, Op 13 (the 'Pathétique'), and Haydn's grand late Sonata in E flat, HobXVI:52

                    Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)
Mozart: Piano Sonata in G, K283
Beethoven: Piano Sonata in C minor, Op 13 (Pathétique)
Haydn: Piano Sonata in E flat, HXVI:52
Live from Wigmore Hall, London, Ronald Brautigam plays Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn.

can I recommend todays lunchtime mash up, for those who missed it?
Despite being a mix and match affair, there was excellent music from Bax, Ligeti and Bartok.

Missed some of the Bartok, but the Ligeti String Quartet , an early work which I didn't know ,sounded really excellent stuff, and is well worth seeking out.

Also some decent stuff on Ao3, including some Kodaly.

Edit : would anybody care to recommend a favourite recording of the Ligeti, please?

... they worked with the composer on this recording; you get the (IMO) even better Second Quartet, too; and it's yours for under a fiver (and that includes P&P). I wouldn't hesitate.

                            20th century harpsichord music

Tuesday to Friday, from the Aldeburgh Festival.

Friday’s concert had works for harpsichord by Martinu, Bartok, and Ligeti perfumed by Mahan Esfahani, which, I though, were excellent.
Music by Martinu, Bartok, Ligeti, Janacek and Ravel from the 2014 Aldeburgh Festival.

I wish the programme was made to sound more like a recording of a live concert.

Good spot, DS. Hopefully it will be available on iplayer soon.....as it isn't currently.......

These chopped up concerts are irritating though.

The mention of Mahan Esfahani above reminded me that he is performing again at Aldeburgh (Snape) during this Summer's Snape Summer Proms, tickets still available. The concert schedule was in this morning's local paper and his recital caught the eye, Bach I think.
