Agreed! Still, it was worth switching on just to hear the first half of the programme.

I heard the opening bars of the Chromatic Fantasia and the closing bars of the Liszt extravaganza but from the comments above look forward to hearing the repeat in full.

For me, Daniel Trifonov's playing is nothing short of miraculous. He was on fine form in today's Lunchtime Concert (performances recorded at last year's Verbier Festival).

Marvellous and a bonus that it was presented by Fiona Talkington too.

If I may I recommend a double CD of John Ireland chamber works that has given me enormous pleasure for many years: Chandos CHAN 9377/8, featuring Lydia Mordkovitch, Karine Georgian and Ian Brown.

                          Marvellous set that.
John Ireland’s Cello Sonata is one of my desert island pieces.

Thanks. These works are unknown to me. Definitely a gap and your recommendation has nudged me towards filling it. I've ordered a used copy quite cheaply from Amazon.

Lunchtime today, the Appassionata in a powerful performance by Stephen Hough with the finale taken at a convincing speed ie not the silent movie pianist getting over-excited that sometimes happens.

Last year I heard SH conclude a wonderful Debussy/Beethoven recital with the Appassionata played on his own glorious Yamaha.

A young French couple sat to my right, their little boy (6 - 8?) sat next to me to get the best sight line. After Hough delivered the final pages with great drama, the boy jumped on his mum's lap and cried, overcome with emotion! Made my day (you don't get that from CDs)
