In this series Malcolm Martineau, A Life in Song, the acclaimed accompanist and song specialist is joined by mezzo soprano Kitty Whately with French repertoire perfectly suited for the mezzo soprano voice by Ravel, Berlioz and Faure
Berlioz: Les Nuits d'ete
Faure: La Bonne Chanson
Poulenc: Tel jour, tel nuit
Ravel: Cinq Melodies Grecques
Kitty Whately, mezzo-soprano
Simon Keenlyside, baritone
Malcolm Martineau, piano.
We can’t see how the concerts are organised (chopped-up or in full), it looks a very good week for song recital fans.

I was very glad to hear the repeat yesterday of Chistoph Prégardien's Lunchtime recital with Julius Drake. Having admired this singer in Lieder over the years but never heard him live, I made the effort to take myself off to Wigmore last Monday and was not disappointed. He really does put the songs across beautifully. The programme was well chosen with the individual items in the first group of songs linked thematically to the Schumann Liederkreis Op 39 which followed. We also got a second encore which was not broadcast.

I also fancy , and have done for some time, adding to my few Pregardien discs. I have Die Schoene Mullerin and Dichterliebe , but not much else.Strong recommendations welcome.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

An interesting chamber music concert:
Glinka: Grand Sextet in E flat
Saint-Saëns: Caprice on Danish and Russian Airs
Prokofiev: Quintet for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola & double bass
I thought Ensemble 360 sounded very good.

The cello sonata is available c/w the piano trio on the CPO label,I like the string quartet and piano quintet too.
All available to listen to in the Naxos library

St Magnus International Festival: 24-27 July
Four chamber concerts with each concert including works by not so familiar (to me) composers. The Telemann sonata performed by Danish Sinfonietta was excellent.
Today’s programme.

I attended the Radio 3 lunchtime concert today at LSO St Luke's which was recorded for transmission on Tuesday 25th September. I highly recommend it, providing one is a fan of Chopin of course, since it was an all Chopin recital by Ingrid Fliter. A bit of a tour de force, she played the entire programme without interruption ( as we were advised by Fiona Talkington prior to the concert ) Three nocturnes, a polonaise, mazurka, waltz and ballade with a further nocturne as an encore.
