    Mahler 8

Those who have been waiting patiently for a broadcast of the Mahler 8 conducted by Donald Runnicles at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival may be interested to know that it will be the cover disc on a forthcoming BBC Music Magazine.
I believe it will be the April issue.

    The performers are:
    Erin Wall, soprano
    Hillevi Martinpelto, soprano
    Nicole Cabell, soprano
    Katarina Karneus, mezzo-soprano
    Catherine Wyn-Rogers, mezzo-soprano
    Simon O'Neill, tenor
    Anthony Michaels-Moore, baritone
    John Relyea, bass
    Edinburgh Festival Chorus
    RSNO Junior Chorus
    BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
    Donald Runnicles, conductor

Brilliant! Unbelievably, it will only be the second 8th in my 'collection' - the other one being the Solti.

If it's the April edition it will presumably be on the shelves in March - so not long to wait

It is indeed the cover disc on the April issue which goes on sale on March 17.

I too have been waiting patiently for the broadcast. Can anyone who was present comment on the performance? Oh and how significant that the disappointing Prom opener from last season is not being used.

I was present at the performance and can say that it was very fine indeed. The soloists were excellent and without a weak link. The chorus surpassed itself as did the juniors. It is certainly the best thing that I have heard Runnicles conduct live.
The whole performance was, to me, in a different league from the Proms opener, although as I only heard the latter broadcast, I'm probably not the best judge.
Runnicles had a firm grasp of the structure of the two parts and made sense of the whole. I considered it a fine achievement and was looking forward to recording the broadcast in due course. Even better now, I can buy the magazine with the CD.

I do have the BBCMM and hope my tinnitus is better by March 17th so that I can really listen/hear it.

I also videod the 2010 Prom, should I now delete it as I haven't played it back yet?

salymap, It might be interesting to keep it and compare the performances.

How did the BBC MM Runnicles Mahler 8 go down when it finally reached your CD players?

I got round to playing it the other night with a friend who had not been impressed with it on his own sound system. Oh dear, the recording quality, no treble, no fizz - sounds like the mikes were 1/2 a mile away from the performers, with thick velvet curtains in between! Some signs do creep through that the performance was skilled and exciting, but the ear of faith is surely essential when listening to this disc.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!
