Martha Argerich and Manchester Camerata 12/07/13

I received an ominous e-mail from the Bridgwater Hall this afternoon about the above .

Opening it in trepidation , so far she has not cancelled but they are playing Beethoven 1 instead of Shostakovich 1

Not bad news IMO - she is marvellous in those early Beethoven concertos - fingers crossed she is there on Friday !

    A win-win there I'd say Barbie - I hope it's a life-enhancing concert

Like you say, Barbs, everything crossed! She even had the gall to cancell her prom concert! I mean!

Hope it is a wonderful concert and that Martha turns up (really appreciated the recently posted photo of her in yesteryear with a young and sultry Claudio Abbado btw )

Currently in Manchester. It is Sunny and the Manchester Festival is in full swing. I really rate this place - think - Halle, BBC Phil, Manchester Camerata, The Royal Exchange, City, United and Coronation Street to boot !!!

As a Yorkshireman - this gives me great pain. But hey - I guess I must be a masochist

        Best Wishes,

        Tevot

Did she ? When was that - I saw play The Ravel a few years back at the Proms - she was utterly fab as expected !

Wasn't that the Beethoven triple concerto? Or am I getting befuddled by sunshine and over-work?

Your argument was going really well until then.

It was the Beethoven Triple Concerto, on Monday July 18, 2011 (the day after Havergal Brian 1, so I remember it well, as I was at both of those Proms), with Frank Braley stepping in for Martha Argerich:

A mainly French affair and a fabulous line-up for Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, with Frank Braley alongside the debut of brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon conducted by Myung-Whun Chung.

I'm sure the good folks at Manchester have a back-up pianist lined up just in case the worst happens, especially given Argerich's reputation for canceling. Here's hoping, of course, that no back-up is needed.

Ah yes! the Caupacon Brothers were going to fill the other gaps!

I should think Martha Argerich will have arrived in Manchester by now if she is coming. I'm certainly looking forward to the concert.

It was a terrific concert all round and i was very impressed by Manchester Camerata and Gabors Takacs Nagy too . They gave us a powerful and atmospheric Music for Strings , percussion and Celesta and cleverly by programming Part's Lamentate with David Kadouch as soloist for after the interval had a spare pianist in cse Martha cancelled.

She was the star of the show of course and how she shone . I was only ten rows back and it was great to see how she exchanged looks with the woodwind and brass in passages where there was interplay between them and she smiled a lot - she seemed to be having a great time .

She was dazzling as you might expect but I have never heard the Largo played with more feeling and depth - the opening bars took your breath away and the finale was for once a truly witty romp rather than not sounding as it is meant to do.

One of the true highlights of my concert going life and the orchestra were so engaged - there was a real frisson of excitement in their playing .
