    Barbirolli

    B

    Julia Fischer
    Ivan Fischer

      Barbirollians,

      1. Violeta Parra
Un ser excepcional y maravilloso. Increible como su obra es una denuncia contra la pobreza e injusticia, y a la vez una muestra sublime de humanidad y amor. ...

Amazing but sadly true, she's virtually unheard on uk radio. Fortunately as direct result of this board and its members
that situation has changed significantly this very week.

Messiaen playing the organ. Also, though I heard him play lots of Bach, and his own music, I never did hear Cornelius Cardew playing Feldman, whose music he was highly regarded as a performer of.

          A) Boult, Barbirolli, Szell and Carlos Kleiber.

          B) Over the past 35 years or so I've made strenuous efforts to ensure I see the musicians I most wanted to see and succeeded. So thinking of the future I'll go for Edward Gardner. Plenty of time, hopefully.

Now that theyre getting on a bit I might make the effort to go and hear James Levine
and Zubin Mehta if they came to London.

Furtwangler, but I was only four when he died.

We were so lucky, having Barbirolli in Manchester.

Through my teens I made weekly visits to the Free Trade Hall, courtesy of the cheap seats in the gods arranged by the school. Though JB was often away conducting in Houston. (It all seemed perfectly normal and I never realised at the time just how lucky we were.)

Anyway - my choice is Richter. I once nearly saw him. He was giving a recital at the RFH and I drove over from Bristol with a friend. Parked the car and walked into the RFH to be met by someone explaining that Richter had cancelled.

We got back in the car and drove home!

There isn't really anyone currently active who I definitely want to see (though I would definitely travel to hear Radu Lupu again - pity he doesn't like performing in the UK).

There was an option to re-book for another recital Richter was giving but I didn't fancy chancing yet another futile 250 mile round trip.

I buy very very few CDs and much prefer concert tickets. I don't care for the music making of many of the revered names from the past. I think there are many wonderful performers around at the moment and we should be buying their CDs rather than those of the dead.

                      A Easy!

                      Michelangeli
                      Szell
                      Oistrakh

B Difficult! I could go on and on.

I saw Messiaen and Shostakovich taking bows. I wish I had heard them playing their preferred instruments. I saw Dame Eva Turner at Janet Baker's operatic farewell at the Proms, Gluck's Orfeo et Euridice. I wish I had heard her.

I have heard Britten play the piano and conduct, Max and Walton conduct: I have been honoured.
