    Death of jam es watson

Heard today of the death of that famous trumpet player James Watson. Such a sad loss to the world of brass. He was 59. RIP

Somewhat taken aback at this sad news - at his comparative youth, and the loss of another exceptional trumpeter, who like Maurice Murphy was associated with both the brass band and orchestral worlds at the highest level, and Black Dyke band and the London orchestras in particular.

By coincidence I was at the Dyke concert in Birmingham on Sunday afternoon - they mustn't have known at that time as no mention was made as it surely would have been otherwise, given that he was Nicholas Childs' illustrious predecessor. I well recall the first time I heard a band of this calibre live - Dyke conducted by James Watson. It was hard to decide what was more impressive - the almost unbelievable virtuosity of the band in general, or the sensational trumpet solos with them Watson included (and was very modest about in his natural and witty introductions).

Another sad loss to the world of superlative brass playing. RIP.
