    What's on in february 2011

SATURDAY 19th February 2011, THE HOGAN ENSEMBLE, directed by Simon Hogan ST MARTIN'S CHURCH, SALISBURY

The Hogan Ensemble is a young choir formed mainly from choral scholars and ex-scholars at Salisbury Cathedral, Lancing College and Royal Holloway College (Univ of London). Simon Hogan has been organ scolar at Salisbury, Ealing Abbey and is about to begin at St Paul's Cathedral. In the beautiful accoustic of Salisbury's St Martin's Church (regularly used for choral and song recitals and record sessions) he will direct Frank Martin's powerful Mass for Double Choir, Josef Rheinberger's Cantus Missae and Gregorio Allegri's popular Miserere Mei, Deus.

The superb little William Hill organ of St Martin's will be played by Benjamin Bloor. Ben is the organ scholar at St George's Chapel Windsor, previously being scholar at Derby. He is still only 18. Installed by Hill in 1869 the St Martin's organ was looked after by them until 1994. Since Hill, Norman and Beard ceased trading Nicholson has maintained it adding 3 pedal ranks in 2002. It's beautifully carved casing forms part of the rood screen.

The Rheinberger Mass (Cantus Missae) is an important work by the celebrated Munich organist who died in 1901 and is to be found on the Hogan Ensemble's new CD "Sing Joyfully" which also contains music by Byrd, Lobo, Gibbons, Parry, Wood, Mendelssohn and Faure.

Tickets are available from Musicroom, Salisbury (01722 322278) or on the door. Information can be obtained at www.hoganensemble.co.uk

          Friday 18 February 2011, 7.30pm Barbican Hall

Tchaikovsky Symphony No 1 in G minor, ‘Winter Daydreams’
Schnittke Faust Cantata, ‘Seid nüchtern und wachet’

BBC Symphony Orchestra/BBC Symphony Chorus/Vassily Sinaisky
Susan Bickley mezzo-soprano/David Hansen countertenor/Robert Murray tenor/Mark Stone baritone

Quoth the website: "In the early 1980s, Alfred Schnittke produced a typically provocative take on the Faust legend. His Faust Cantata blends tango, cabaret, rock gig, medieval incantation, grand opera and bawdy theatre to chart the terrible story of its hero’s frenzied descent to hell. Contrast this with the richness of Russian life, landscape and folk-music depicted in Tchaikovsky’s exquisite First Symphony."
