Elgar’s choralwork The Dream of Gerontius will be performed in Salisbury Cathedral by a stellar line up of internationally renowned musicians on Sunday 27 March 2011 at 7.30pm. Edward Gardner, MD of English National Opera and one of the critically-acclaimed conductors of his generation, directs the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Choir and the Boys' Choir of Clare College. The distinguished soloists are Christine Rice (mezzo-soprano), Paul Groves (tenor) and Alastair Miles (bass). A rare opportunity to experience this sublime music in the soaring architecture of Salisbury Cathedral. Anybody who saw John Bridcut's film on Elgar will know that Edward Gardner is an Elgarian of the highest order.

Hmm bit of a trek to Salisbury from here but this is one I wouldn't miss if in the locality. The only issue might be the possible acoustic problems that have marred every cathedral performance of Gerontius I've heard.

It might sound better at the RFH on IIRC 26/3.

And of course there's Bychkov conducting Rachmaninov and Walton on 19/3 and Schubert, Brahms-Glanert and Rachmaninov on 25/3 at the Barbican.

The secret is to sit about halfway down the nave (Rows P-S). You cannot see much but the sound blends well without the echo blurring everything. Sit too close or farther back and the sound is truly murder in the cathedral. The cheap seats in the side aisles work much the same way.
