Tristan & Isolde Thursday 11th April

Did anyone listen to this? I was there & thought that Robert Dean Smith as Tristan was superb, & Markus Eiche as Kurwenal. The orchestra was also pretty good, & the off-stage cor anglaise especially so. If you missed the broadcast the 3 acts have been recorded (in their Edinburgh performances) & will be broadcast in the afternoons of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd of May.

I'm about to relisten to the Strauss at the beginning of the concert. I also caught Stephen Johnson's excellent 'Discovering Music' about the opera, and expect I will try and listen to this in order, as I don't know Wagner, but hearing SJ enthusing about the 'Tristan chord' piqued the Noggin curiosity.
It loved to happen. -- Marcus Aurelius

You must listen. Nina Stemme sang in the first two acts & she is, I believe, the Isolde of the day - I felt so lucky to be able to experience someone of her standing. I missed Act 2 (nasty cough) but seeing her live in Act 1 was brilliant - superb singing and acting, even though it was a concert performance. (sorry to enthuse about something you won't be able to experience listening on the radio)

I thought Act 3 very very good. Dean Smith in particular. I attended Edinburgh performance. Attending Dutchman tomorrow. Such a pity Ian Storey and Nina Stemme could not have appeared throughout the run, better still a complete concert performance! What will we do when Runnicles moves on?

I posted my thoughts about the 'Dutchman' on the 'A Night at the Opera' forum. I'll be interested to hear what you think. (& it's good to have another Scottish correspondent - it gets a bit London dominated here sometimes )
