Well, my faith in Sky Arts 2 has been somewhat restored- from the 4th May they are running a Wagner season which will include a broadcast of the Met's latest Ring Cycle. No further details as yet, but I'll keep you posted and maybe start a new thread when the schedule is released. And only 4 more days of Rieu to go....

Not a terribly good name for a music venue (perhaps that's why the ticket prices are so high - you get to hear the music more than once)

          the Proms
or is it another name for the Royal Albert Hall?

I was in England earlier this week, just in time for the seasonally-challenged 'André Rieu: Home for Christmas' on Sky Arts 2.

I believe the term is "car crash TV" - it's ghastly but you just can't tear your gaze away from the ghastliness. The women in the orchestra have been dressed by a colour-blind Sindy doll fetishist. André Rieu stands before all, looking smugly serene, "feeling" every note in his face, and appears to be in training for the World Gurning Championships.

It's the kitschest, most saccharine-laden, sentimental tosh I've even since, and since no man is an island, here's a trailer so that you can suffer along with me:

              Rieu gets a roasting

Thankfully Sky Arts 2's mad fortnight of Rieu comes to an end today, but not before the Irish Times gives him a right royal roasting:-

Couldn't have put it better myself!!!

                It's brill...!

                Loved "mullet-headed Dutch waltz-strangler"

                and

"He tortures me with his ruthless desecrations of Mozart. I scream vile abuse at his unrelentingly smug face. Only one of us is making millions from the exchange."

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

When I saw the thread title I was hoping it was meant literally.

[Ed: I altered the original title when I merged two threads: Was, "Is this an April Fool?" - ff]

(I should explain that this post was in response to #21 'Rieu gets a roasting')

Good article, but, astonishingly, there are comments at the foot of the page which suggest that Rieu has strong support from some quarters.

I find the Sky decision very puzzling. Fortunately I have been on holiday for most of the past two weeks.

Perhaps Padraig is a fan of 'Waldo de los Rieu', though I somewhat doubt it. More likely that Padraig misidentified the comments I was referring to. To clarify, it was those below the article linked to by Mr. Pee.

Oh I got the right comments, Bryn. I just thought it was strange for you to appear to influence any possible argument arising.
                                That ok with you MrGongGong?
