    Siegfried Jerusalem: Jewish?

Does anyone know if Herr Jerusalem is of the tribe of Abraham? This is just idle curiosity on my part - I'm not some proto-Nazi who needs the information so I can immediately take a hammer to all the CDs/DVDs I own on which he appears.

There's a story I've heard about a rather unpleasant (for him) encounter that S.J. had with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf at one of his first Bayreuth Festivals - I won't repeat it, though, in case it's just apocryphal tittle-tattle.

Yes AFAIK he is. And unfortunately the Bayreuth-story is based on facts, not just aprocryphal tittle-tattle.

Er... technically there is no tribe of Abraham, only the 12 tribes of Israel (Jacob).

There are a number of less than pleasant Elisabeth Schwarzkopf stories around, which I would like to think are not true, but some probably are?

I'm a fan of S.J. and was hoping that the Schwarzkopf story wasn't true, if only for his sake. I've never liked Schwarzkopf's voice or interpretative style, anyway, so it doesn't upset me over-much to hear that that story is true.

Wouldn't it be rather difficult to be born and survive Germany in 1940 and be Jewish?

Okay, I've googled for like ten minutes and can't find the story. Wha' happened? Whisper it to me.

She told him he couldn't go out with her that night as her husband (also Jewish I believe) was around. Just shows you how easy it is to make up stories like this one ...

A certain person on these boards seems to loooove tittle-tattle.

It is. But it is just as reliable as his knowledge of pre-war and pre-1945 German geography (or at least checking it).

                      Indeed it is.

Vladimir Ashkenazy once said that no one who has lived in a free country can ever be totally free to judge the actions of someone who has lived under a tyranny. I always try to bear this in mind when reading stories such as these.
