Manfred Symphony from Maazel and the New Philharmonia

Concert performances of Tchaikovsky's Manfred are not all that common. This one, recently added to the "Tapes" page of my website

is from a concert somewhere between 1968 and 1970 possibly , considering the orchestra and the acoustic, in the Festival Hall. Lorin Maazel conducts the New Philharmonia. I hope it meets with your approval. Elsewhere on my site you will find that I have added transcriptions from 78s of the Busch Quartet's "Death and the Maiden", Artur Schnabel's "Volume 2" of Beethoven Sonatas which includes Opus 109 and the Menuhin, LSO, Elgar Violin Concerto.

Ah, Tchaikovsky's Manfred! What a work! I cant see why it's not p[erformed more often. I have Mariss Janson's recording on Chandos. Be good if he does that work again.

Maazel's VPO Manfred is indeed one of the best around. Thrilling 1960's vintage Decca sound.

I looked up Stephen Pettit's book on the Philharmonia to see if there was any clue to precisely date this Manfred and whole there isn't it is interesting to note that he was being touted as a possible successor to Klemperer who indeed thought highly of him. Where did it all go wrong?

Maazel has never disappointed me in concert, but he does seem to have made a few enemies along the way: I've heard that his relations with London orchestras suffered when he was reported to have told Mrs. Thatcher that London musicians were 'overpaid and underworked' (sic). Isn't Maazel supposedly the highest paid conductor currently working?

This was a 1972 recording - several years after Maazel's recordings of Symphonies 1 - 6 had been released.

Manfred was the first Tchaikovsky I heard live. It was wonderful!

Was in the same programme as Petrushka.
