Pretty short measure for a concert . You would have thought they could have rustled up an Overture.

Froissart would have been good when do you ever get to hear that ? or Schubert's overture in the italian style .

What a lovely performance of the Schumann, no striving for effect, just beautiful playing and fine orchestral accompaniment, followed by a delightful interval interview. He's 70 next year, and by way of celebration, I hope that the opportunity is taken to record him in all the Beethoven sonatas.

His analogue survey was pretty good and is still available on Brilliant Classics in decent CD transfers AFAIK.


[Oops. Looks like Brilliant Classics has dropped the set. They did issue the sonatas both in a separate box and in their 40 CD Beethoven Masterworks box (which is the manifestation in which I have them.)]

Solid tempi across the board....beautiful. Makes a lot of pianists sound as though they are in a hurry to get away!.

Didn't like the first movement of the Elgar 1 - a bit portentous - but it has improved since then

Spoke too soon some rather alarming accelerations and decelerations in the finale .

I was going to say something similar, but I was only able to tune in to the last movement, I wouldn't have had you not made that latter point: I found the tempo relationships ill-suited to the music...

The first movement reminded me of " stout and steady ".
