Ireland, Walton, Vaughan Williams Monday 14 January

BBC Philharmonic - Ireland, Walton, Vaughan Williams

    Monday 14 January 2013 at 7.30pm

    Live from MediaCityUK in Salford
The BBC Philharmonic, conducted by John Wilson
    Guy Johnston (cello)

    Ireland: A London Overture
    Walton: Cello Concerto
    Interval
    Vaughan Williams: Symphony No 5

A good programme of British music. The Walton Cello Concerto, not as well known as his violin and viola concertos, is a tour-de-force for the soloist and, as I recall, a bit of a stinker for the 1st horn, as well.

... Is what Ireland meant in his tune for this overture. Mum told me.

Well, love old Ireland, as a friend used to say, we all knew that. You see, Laddie we had men who collected the fares and hung onto the pole at the back of those old buses, shouting just that.

Usually as you got up to leave the bus started up and you were csrried passed Piccadilly but no matter.

          Good one, S_A!

I heard the same thing from Donald Macleod when Ireland was CotW.

Not as definitive as your mum, mind

I was planning to have this on in the car as it would have coincided with my return trip from the frozen north which is now not happening. So I can have a binge on the big stereo in the warm!

          Thanks for the reminder.

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It will be interesting to see what John Wilson makes of tonight's concert, although he was in a recorded concert on R3 yesterday conducting Adams, Britten and Holst.

Well I'm no cellist or music critic but that sounded pretty good to me.
The Walton concerto is a big favourite of mine (Piatigorsky).

I enjoyed it too. Lovely, clean yet rich tone in the lyrical bits from Prof. Johnson (Perhaps a little less secure in the fiddly high bits...)

And some charming Britten bits and bobs in the interval too.

Fascinating to hear John Wilson conduct the VW 5. Beautifully prepared and eminently 'fresh' my first reaction.

Perhaps climaxes could have registered more? Even so JW has gone up rather considerably in my estimation. At times his conducting has seemed a shade too careful and lacking flair but not in tonight's symphony.

I would have expected John Wilson to have conducted the Ireland piece at a nippier pace.

I missed it ! That's what comes of starting playing the Barbirolli VW 2 and 8 at 6.30 pm and ending up encoring the 8th !
