    NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

As it happens I've heard both playing Johann Strauss, Roz with the BBCSO and Gergiev with the VPO. Gergiev wasn't at all bad (two polkas iirc as encores) but Noddy wins hands down. He imparted a real sense of fun into the proceedings which is more than can be said for Gergiev's dour demeanour.

No, I'll say it again, Manfred Honeck is your man! Ex-VPO player, knows this music inside out and must have played in the NYDC any number of times. The VPO should be on the phone to his agent PDQ. Not too sure, though, how forgiving they are to those who have deserted their ranks.

What about asking back Zubin ? His 2007 lemon blossom was different class.

Well, Haitink did a very fine Strauss encore at the Proms last year....and Col has the right approach to tempi and rubato to be the perfect New Year's Day Concert conductor, even if he wouldn't especially like it. He has conducted the Last Night so a gig's a gig... Not sure he has any relationship with the VPO though, or am I wrong?

There's a DVD of the Symphonie Fantastique from 2004, so they have form!

I would love to see Bernard at the helm. His sheer musicianship would surely tease out all the wonderful fibrous inner qualities inherent in the music. The Proms encore was indeed something quite wondrous. It's still a bit difficult to imagine him conducting the audience in Radetsky or dishing out cuddly toys.

Exactly so! That's quite an image, will keep me smiling for days!

To be honest, I'd very much doubt if either Sir Col or Bernard would seriously want to do it but you never know...

It would be part of the fun, in a dark sort of a way! Scooters, anyone?

I think venerable (and rather talented) old codgers are best for this sort of thing. The VPO won't pay the slightest attention to a young tyro in this repertory. Am just waiting for someone to suggest John Wilson...

For that, you might have to suggest Russell Watson, Alfie Boe or Katherine Jenkins.

Some might have said that about Barenboim, Pretre, Kleiber and Karajan. Haitink played a Strauss waltz with the VPO as a Prom encore.

Well, Kleiber always had great respect for this music, imbibed from his father who taught him that it was the most difficult of all to conduct. His love of 'waltz' music, whether of J. or R. Strauss, was pronounced. Karajan, too, would have had no issues. Barenboim struggled last time, in my view. He has the personal vision and approach for this music, and is bold enough with tempi, but the schwung and the geist eludes him.

Indeed he did. I was there that night and as Alison says it was quite wondrous. No-one would be more delighted if he took it on but the VPO probably already have bookings made for a few years in advance. Bernstein was to have done it in 1992 (I think) but sadly never made it.

                            Viennese Style

I must say that I too found the FWM concert to contain a considerable amount of the Viennese style just as Hornspieler did, particularly in the waltzes. But I was listening on radio and not watching wooden gestures on the goggle-box. That may make a difference.

Moreover I have seen FWM conduct Bruckner and clearly get very emotional about the music. I think his performances of Bruckner very fine in a modern way. Not that that has much to do with Strauss, I suppose.

What the heck was that thing that FW-M did with giving stuffed animals to orchestra members during one piece?

I hear that as from next season the Henry Wood appellation is to be dropped from the Proms which will now be known as the BBC John Wilson Promenade Concerts. Given his hectic schedule, including 46 Proms this summer, Mr Wilson wishes to wait a little longer before taking up the New Year invitation to Vienna.
