Good questions but not easy to answer! It all seems like a different age. One thing you will notice is that the VPO players (particularly the percussion) do a lot of clowning around. In those days it wasn't quite the global media event it now is. Some of the humour is rather heavy handed and perhaps doesn't travel well. The repertoire was more restricted to the better known pieces and I suspect that the record companies now have much more input than 40 odd years ago.

Treat yourself to a New Year gift and see what you think!

A very happy new year to you.

Interesting that this is regarded as an "annual event"
last time I stumbled across this I lasted all of 10 minutes mostly confined to being geeky about the horn valves
            but the music

but for those who love it, please enjoy it without me

R3 home page lists Mariss Janssons as conductor. Trelawny tells us it's F Welser-Most.
              Erm...........??

I'm not sure which R3 home page you're looking at, Draco, but this one not only names FW-M, but also has his photo!

As a heading it matches the uncomplimentary nickname given him by some members of the LPO when as a young conductor he was at the helm. Frankly worse than most!

From the Musikverein, Mariss Jansons conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in its traditional New Year concert of music by Johann Strauss II and his contemporaries. >

I make it four: two back desk first violins, third flute, and harp.

This must be a record, surely

An oversight, probably, as you know they might ruin the sound.

No, the total is six - 2 x violins, 2 x violas, 3rd flute and harp - although the flautist has only played in Wagner so far... clearly Strauss is beneath her.
