    New Year concert/VPO nyd fwm

The New Year concert coming up next week, but no thread? Usually there has been extensive discussion about the merits of different conductors by now, & what might or might not be included.

Was just about to start one, Flossie, but you've beaten me to it.

    Here is the programme: http://www.wienerphilharmoniker.at/i..._concerts=1210

Personally, I'd have opened proceedings with an overture - there are still plenty not yet heard at the NYDC - but this looks a better selection for Welser-Möst than a couple of years ago. I'd also liked to have seen items from the Strauss's based on Wagner and Verdi rather than the chaps themselves - there must be some, I'll look it up - but this is a minor quibble.

    Looking forward to this one.

      Vpo nyd fwm

A thread for this annual event.

The programme looks enticing and FWM will surely hope to make more of an impresion than
      two years ago.

I'm not quite sure about finising the first part with an overture (glad to have some Suppe though)
and starting the second half with Sphaerenklange. It could work I suppose.

Yes, I'm looking forward to this programme - http://www.wienerphilharmoniker.at/u...rogramm_en.pdf - with a nod to bicentenary birthday boys Verdi and Wagner. I'm also pleased to see one of my favourite Strauss waltzes - Wo die Zitronen blühen (Where the Lemon Trees Blossom) - in the second half.

Another fun game to play... how many female players will feature?!

Reminder that you can watch the whole thing live on the BBC HD channel.

Flossie started a thread on this but, oddly, mine was the only response. Anyway, I've pasted in part of that response here. Thanks for the reminder about the HD channel, IGI, forgot about that!

According to the trailer there will be an extract from 'Don Carlos'. I don't really see the Grand Inquisitor or the Auto da Fe fitting in with the world of waltzes & Polkas

(I should probably have started this on the 'Performance' thread.)

Yes, there's a quadrille on themes from Verdi's Un ballo in maschera:

Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....

I'd decided that the title of this thread was the Welsh for 'The VPO has no women', but I've worked it out now . I should just point out that if you look up the initials FWM on Google you will not get the name of the conductor.

I still miss Richard Baker! And I still greatly miss Willi Boskovsky every New Year's Day. Anyway, this will be my 42nd NYDC.

Alison, for a flavour of what those Boskovsky NYDC's were like I urge you to get this DVD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boskovskys-C...6996027&sr=8-4. It's a different world!

I saw every one on this set after (and including) 1972. The whole of the 1974 second half is on this DVD and I remember that well. I was 19 at the time!

I've aged along with many of the VPO players and very many on this DVD are no longer with us.
