I have to say I have found FW-M underwhelming, yet again. He has little charisma that is discernible, and his technique is hardly very inspired or fluid. It may well be that he is a very fine musician - but I cannot help wondering why the net isn't cast wider for the conductors' roster for these concerts. What about Christian Thielemann, John Eliot Gardiner (I remember a very fine recording of the Merry Widow he did with the VPO), Semyon Bychkov? The latter might get his metronome out, but it could be interesting... Pretre's concerts were rather good, even though he is not a 'great' conductor. The music sparkled and danced as it should. Compare today's account of the Music of the Spheres with Kleiber's in 1992 and Karajan's in 1987 - probably both on YouTube - and you will see the quality chasm yawning open before you!

The jury is still out about Welser-Möst but agree his lack of charisma is a considerable drawback. Listened to without the visuals might create a different impression. Kleiber and Karajan were a class apart in this event as well as in pretty much everything else and, yes, compared to those magnificent NYDC's this one was a pale imitation at best.

Other conductors? JEG (please no) fell out with the VPO, I think. My own choice would be Manfred Honeck, a former player with the VPO, now Music Director at the Pittsburgh SO. They played Strauss encores after their 2011 Prom and they were terrific.

I 'm pretty sure I spotted Julie Andrews in the audience. If Petroc name-checked her I missed it.

            She was. He didn't.

Wot no Roger Moore this year? Angela Merkel , another sometime visitor, busy sorting out the Euro crisis?

Presumably Julie Andrews was lucky in the ticket ballot whereas Mr Moore and Frau Merkel were not.....

She was presenting for PBS in the US.

Could not Bernard Haitink or Colin Davis have a go?

The two threads discussing this concert seem to be covering the same ground, so I've merged them without compromising their content.
