You make a good point well, Chris. I remember the stick Simon Rattle got - and continues to get, from some quarters. There was sheer delight when he was rumoured - I've no idea how accurately - to be having difficulties abroad. But I've never heard of Villlazon getting the snobs' treatment - surely it can't be because of his voice?

I feel that's a bit sweeping, Chris! I imagine those who have problems with CH all have their own reasons and are "coming from" different directions.
In my own case, I have tried to explain why I don't like his style, but I've also said I recognise there's not much point in going on about it ad nauseam.
But I have absolutely no problems with any of the other people you mention, and never did have. Even dear old Eric Robinson! I have found nearly all of them inspirational at one time or another. Moreover, for years I was a baroque specialist, having studied mainly with one, and am passionately interested and involved in HIP and its ramifications.
And I could be quite wrong. In the 1970s I couldn't stand Humphrey Burton, who seemed a phoney and a philistine, but I came to think he was OK really
