Chamber Orchestra of Europe - Strauss, Haydn, Beethoven
      Monday 09 September 2013

Drawn from the finest players across the continent, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by French-Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin, play Beethoven's 'Eroica' at The Usher Hall, Edinburgh.
The concert begins with Strauss's deeply personal and reflective 'Metamorphosen' for solo strings, followed by Haydn's joyful Sinfonia concertante for violin, cello, oboe, bassoon and orchestra.

      Programme.

      Part 1

Strauss - Metamorphosen for 23 Solo Strings
Haydn - Sinfonia concertante for violin, cello, oboe, bassoon and orchestra Hob. I 105

      Interval

      Part 2

Beethoven - Symphony No 3 in E flat Op. 55 ''Eroica''

      Lorenza Borrani (Violin)
      William Conway (Cello)
      Chamber Orchestra of Europe
      Yannick Nézet-Séguin (Conductor).
Now that the 2013 Proms are out of the way, we are back onto the Performance Forum and my first choice is a mouthwatering concert from the Edinburgh Festival.

Please feel free to draw attention to your own personal choices. I do not own this thread!

Chamber Orchestra of Europe - Strauss, Mozart, Beethoven

        Tuesday 10 September 2013

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, delves further into the richly contrasting worlds of Strauss and Beethoven in this second concert from The Usher Hall, Edinburgh.

The concert begins with Strauss's striking combination of clarinet, bassoon and strings in the lyrical 'Duett Concertino' which highlights the talents of the Orchestra's soloists and harks back to the charm of Mozart. It is Mozart's inspirational Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, with its effortless melodic invention which concludes the first part of this Edinburgh International Festival concert.

After the interval, the COE perform Beethoven's optimistic and energetic Seventh Symphony, which Wagner called 'the apotheosis of the dance'.

        PROGRAMME

        Part 1

        Strauss - Duet Concertino 'AV147'

Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola in E-flat K 364

        Interval

        Part 2

        Beethoven - Symphony No 7 in A Op. 92

        Romain Guyot (Clarinet)
        Matthew Wilkie (Bassoon)
        Lorenza Borrani (Violin)
        Pascal Siffert (Viola)
        Chamber Orchestra of Europe
        Yannick Nézet-Séguin (Conductor).

Second of a series of three concerts from the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival.

BBC SSO, Donald Runnicles and four international soloists perform Verdi's powerful Requiem at the conclusion of the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival. Wednesday, 11th September at 1930
          .

Verdi - Requiem (85 mins - no interval)

          Erin Wall (Soprano)
          Karen Cargill (Mezzo)
          Bryan Hymel (Tenor)
          Eric Owens (Bass)
          Edinburgh Festival Chorus
          BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
          Donald Runnicles (Conductor)

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and its Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles, with four stella soloists and chorus, bring Edinburgh Festival's Usher hall series to the end with Verdi's powerful Requiem.

Starting with the failed performance of the 1868 composite "Requiem in Honour of Rossini" - written by the most distinguished Italian composers - Verdi, strengthened by the death in May 1873 of Alessandro Manzoni, decided to write an entire Requiem which is very much at home on the dramatic extremes of the opera stage.

No new BBC commisions. No pop music to draw in those who are not really interested in standard classical music repertoire.

Just pleasurable listening (no analysis neccesary)

We were at both these concerts and they were superb. Beethoven 7 especially.

              Well worth a listen.

I would have gone just to have another look at Lorenza Borrani. Surely the most beautiful orchestra leader in the world.

I always like what the CoE do. They seem to have quite an individual sound. Look at their Brahms project with haitink at the Proms last year(wasn't it)

Oh dear! Yet more film music for three successive days, but if you can stomach yet another Rite of Spring, this time with Andris Nelsons and the CBSO, you can hear it next Thursday 19th September, along with yet more Wagner with another run at the Tannhauser Overture and the Wesendonck Lieder.

                      7.30 start.

                      Wagner: Tannhäuser - Overture
                      Wagner: Wesendonck Lieder

                      8.15: Interval

                      Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring

                      Kristine Opolais, soprano
                      CBSO
                      Andris Nelsons, conductor

The BBC Philharmonic, with Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena, perform music for three ballets of the great Russian choreographer Serge Diaghilev, by Falla, Stravinsky and Ravel

Live from Nottingham Royal Concert Hall
                        Presented by Martin Handley

Falla: The Three Cornered Hat - Suite No.1
                        Prokofiev: Violin Concerto no.2

                        8.15 - Interval music -

                        8.35
Ravel: Daphnis and Chloë - Suite No. 2
                        Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring

                        Akiko Suwanai (violin)
                        BBC Philharmonic
                        Juanjo Mena (conductor)

The BBC Philharmonic, with Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena, perform music from three of the ballets of the great Russian impresario and choroegrapher Serge Diaghilev. Falla's warm-hearted and earthy tale of infatuation and seduction contrasts with the mythological lovers depicted in Ravel's sumptuous score. Stravinsky's famous depiction of the the rituals surrounding the arrival of Spring in pagan Russia is amongst his most powerful and visceral compositions - its 1913 premiere creating a notable scandal in modern music.

In music by one of Stravinsky's compatriots, the Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanai joins the BBC Philharmonic before the interval in the dazzling concert showpiece that is Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto

Wow! What a programme! I'm glad I quit before encountering a programme like this!

The Prokofiev Violin Concerto, sandwiched between these three massive ballet scores is in danger of being overwhelmed. I would have preferred to hear it played at another time, together with less competition.
Why not include Prokofiev with his Romeo and Juliet ballet and finish the poor first horn off completely?
Last edited by Hornspieler; 07-10-13, 09:01. Reason: It's either Manuel de Falla or just Falla. The BBC should know better.

Looking forward to this after two separate visits from family and coping with BT having changed everything once again so I can't read my emails.

I shall probably skip the Rite but a nice programme with Falla, Ravel and Prokofiev.

Shall test the sound on my new TV too, sounds 'thinner' than on my old big set.

I didn't get a chance to record it because of visitors. Doesn't ANYONE have anything to say.

HS, you were excited by the programme ???

Conductor Andrew Manze brings his passion and insight to the work of composers at the heart of his musical personality: continuing his complete cycle of Vaughan Williams Symphonies, with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. To perform that composer's evocation of a frozen wilderness, his Symphony No. 7 (Sinfonia Antartica), the orchestra are joined by award-winning soprano Katherine Broderick and the Ladies of the Glasgow Chamber Choir.

Music composed by a fellow Briton from a slightly later generation, Michael Tippett, begins the concert. His Divertimento on 'Sellinger's Round' takes as its starting point a tune from Elizabethan England. And the pianist and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Shai Wosner takes to the concert platform to perform one of Mozart's most enduring Piano Concertos.
