    NYO Concert at the Barbican

I am amazed that no one has commented so far on the marvellous recorded concert last night given by the NYO at the Barbican.

I have never heard such an exciting performance of Janacek’s Sinfonietta in my life. Although the performance of the Scythian Suite was spoilt for me by the outrageous fast tempo taken by Kristian Jarvi in the first movement, this was an exciting concert for me and I look forward to hearing it again on the iplayer. Did anyone else listen to this concert?
If not, then I recommend that you do so while you can.

I haven't yet listened to the concert but I did record it last night. I am currently editing out all the chat before burning to CD.
Kristjan is a very exciting conductor and I'm sure that the NYO members will have enjoyed playing for him.

Kristjan is indeed a very fine conductor, much more penetrating than his brother Paavo, I think. KJ's recording of Bernstein's Mass is superb.

As for the Scythian Suite, his dad's version on Chandos (c/w Nevsky) is a knockout.

I listened, quite spellbound, and didn't mind a bit the Prokofiev tempo. Also, I've never really liked the Berg but I was quite convinced by this performance, and as you say, the Janacek was riveting. I didn't think anything would rival the Norwegians in a Prom a few years ago, in which more Norwegian brass suddenly appeared at the end, standing in the gallery and almost blowing the hall to pieces! I'll certainly listen to the concert again.

WOW! I have just caught up with that concert. I had to wind back and listen to each piece twice. I confess, after all these years I had never before heard the Scythian Suite which is my loss. It seems so rarely performed. It has been my loss but an exciting discovery.

Every NYO concert is something special but this was extra-special. I love the Berg Violin Concerto, a tear jerker if ever there is one whether you know the background or not. As regulars will know I adore Czech music and Janacek's Sinfonietta and what a superb performance: I have heard Rattle in Salisbury, Haitink with the Concertgeboew at the Proms and Sir Charles so many times. This Kristian Jarvi performance was up there.

I know what I shall hear again tomorrow.

But, you know how the BBC at Radio 3 never let you know what a full programme contains? Shower! I had no idea that the Liszt Totentanz was on the menu. I admit to having a favourite performance on an Australian Eloquence CD (I used to have it on LP) with Peter, the previous poster, Jean Martinon and the LPO. Well, this NYO performance with Stewart Goodyear was devilish fun and a real surprise.

I'll listen to it or record it for later. Thanks for the alert!

This shows what I wrote somewhere else - I've never heard of Australian Eloquence! My recording is now on Decca Bouquet as a filler to the two concertos recorded by Julius Katchen, so God knows where it has since got to!

I have a number of the Eloquence releases. They are Decca, Philips and DG recordings reissued by this Oz-based company. Its' all done under licence and the original logos are clearly visible on the covers. One of their most successful series thus far is the multi-volume Ansermet edition.

Found it at last. They're wrong in saying that Totentanz has its first CD release - I don't mind so long as Universal send me the odd penny!

I enjoyed the concert very much. In particular, I thought Tai Murray's performance of the Berg was exquisite, the sound seemed very well balanced and the textures wonderfully transparent (Gil Shaham was miked far to close at the Proms). Throughout, I found the carrying of themes and phrases between instruments perfectly done and there was always enough momentum to rivet attention. Is it to do with enthusiasm, freshness, a fine conductor? Barenboim also gets breathtaking, electrifying playing from his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.

By chance a relative gave me a CD for Xmas of Cziffra playing Totentanz (and the concertos). What an enigma! He could spin the most beautiful filigree line imaginable, unleash unbelievable torrents of sound - but rather weary at the end I felt I'd been driven in a Ferrari by someone altenating one foot on the brake with one on the accelerator.
