    LPO Wed 12th at 7.30

    Conductor Jurowski.

Mahler 5th symphony in part 2.

Part 1 is a pick and mix assortment.

I wonder whether the solo horn part will be played by the wonderful DAVID PYATT whose relocation from the LSO to the LPO has recently been announced?

The programme I've seen says Part 1 is a work by Gérard Grisey: Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, which isn't a "pick and mix assortment". Has the programme been changed?

I knew the LSO needs a principal horn but I think they have co-principals so didn't know who was departing. Yes, he's a fine capture for the LPO. But I don't want the LSO going anywhere near Elspeth Dutch, the CBSO's superb section leader!

I hope not: this is a superb work, the last written by Grisey before his untimely death in 1998, aged only 52.

This sort of adventurous programming (a crowd-pulling warhorse coupled with a work that deserves wider circulation) is to be commended.

Yes, the Grisey is a sublime thing of wonder... don't avoid it, you'll be well rewarded. Apt and poetic before the Mahler too.

I'm not going tomorrow but shall be there for the LPO Wagner/Bruckner evening on Friday so shall report on the dramatis personae on the back row
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

How interesting re David Pyatt. Definitely a greater buzz around the LPO these days.

Perhaps my least favourite Mahler symphony, I shall be fascinated to hear what Jurowski makes of it.

Least favourite Mahler symphony, Alison? Surely not! Yes, got high expectations for this one and would have liked to have been there. The Grisey work is entirely new to me and this sort of inspired programming is putting the LPO well ahead of its rivals. Recorder at the ready!

Tickets aplenty in the RFH's balcony but I've just had a dinner invitation so it'll be the iPlayer for me.

Interesting. It's my least favourite Mahler symphony too - but still a work I like a great deal. The programming is indeed inspired - but that's been the case for a lot of LPO concerts during Jurowski's tenure. I'm hugely looking forward to hearing this concert.
